This router replaced a six year old Netgear router (300 model?) which seemed to be working fine but was growing outdated. With the AC1600, I should be all set for my future needs for the next few years. It’s better to upgrade before you have to, leaving you to say “I wish I had replaced my router sooner.” The installation was easy. At least in regards to the router. The difficult part was crawling underneath my computer desk and sorting through the maze of cables and adapters to disconnect the old one. First, you completely disconnect your modem and router and download the Nighthawk app. The app walks you through the installation process from there. I precisely followed the instructions and there was one little step the app left out. Reconnecting the ethernet cable to the modem. It’s possible that I overlooked this step and the app did indeed let me know about it when I powered up. The entire process should only take fifteen minutes or so. You don’t have to be an IT expert to do it. Most of my devices run on 2.4 GHz. My Google TV runs on 5 GHz, so I’m now be able to take full advantage of streaming. It reaches all the devices in my home just like the old Netgear. There is absolutely no reason for me not to give the AC1600 less than five stars. I really like the cute little unique but easy to remember network passwords Netgear provides. I had mine memorized after changing only a couple of devices.

The “fun” part comes after you install the router and it took an entire afternoon to update everything. I had no idea just how connected I had become. TV, satellite box, two printers, two vacuum cleaners, two Firesticks, three Echos, three Ring cams, two Fire tablets, and a partridge in a pear tree. I hope this router lasts a good long time!

It takes me like 30 min just to set up the router. It requires you to
    1. force to have internet connection to set up. LAN is not a option for it
    2. it requires u to create a netgear account to manage it
    3. can’t login in using chrome, i used edge instead
    4. forced firmware update before use.
    5. It recommend to app to manage it, but the app takes 5 min to confirm it is connected to router, while is already did from phone settings

This is a cheaper router but it works really well for home usage. If you do use it for a small office, I would recommend getting something better. This is great for an average home size or apartment. You can place it anywhere and it gets decent range and speed. For me, I just use it as a normal router and the antennas really do great for giving me enough signal strength to give me decent house coverage. Unfortunately there are still a small dead zone in my house that no router can seem to reach. The biggest thing I will suggest it put a router in upstairs part of the house as it is easier for signal to reach the rest of the house. Whether it be expensive or cheap, the router has the same security features. The features are more user friendly then most other brands. I am able to completely disconnect the internet from the entire house or set off times to shut off the internet. This makes it so that I can prevent my niece and nephew from using the internet late at night or certain parts of the day. It also has provided security to ensure you internet connection is secure. You will need to set this all up in the netgear router login page which is very user friendly. You can set this up as an access point but I am unsure how to do that with this router or how well it works. It has a pretty strong signal and is able to reach throughout my house regardless of rooms (note that this only had to go through two to three rooms). It does not really have a dead zone at least in my home, but it may in other homes. Be aware that if you are using this as a range extender that you do not put these devices too close as you may actually get signal interference. This device reduces the stress on your modem if you happen to have those modem/wireless router combos while giving a better connection. That being said what I do like about this is that you should use this mostly as a router rather than an extender in my opinion. I would say another thing about this device is that the user interface is pretty straight forward and easy to use compared to many other brands. I usually like netgear products because of that. I am able to easily set this up on my own without needing any technician to come out. The distance is pretty good. It can go through several rooms before having issues with connection. It does have Ethernet ports to plug directly into the router and is very easy to setup. The device is fairly big but light. It has two antennas on top and four ethernet ports on the back to make it easy for the router to provide landlines to other devices. Overall I do like this device as you get a really powerful router that can act as either a router or extender if you wanted to (but not idea how to set the extender mode up). It is a very easy setup and once you are done it is really blazing fast. Another down side of this device is that it does run a bit hotter than normal.

The main thing I love about this router is how easy setting it up was. Everything can be done from your phone and the app does a great job at guiding you through each step at a nice pace. I had the router up and running in just a few minutes which is amazing compared to some of the older routers I have set up. The router automatically sets up a 5ghz and 2.4ghz network which is a nice addition. I do wish the app gave me a bit more control and information over the router there is not much you can do after setting up the router other than things like changing the password, creating a guest network, or changing the security method. The app does let you create a QR code that when scanned connects devices to the network which makes it much easier when people visit. In terms of network strength, it’s nothing amazing but it does get the job done. I am getting slightly slower speeds than other routers I have used however those routers were priced higher. But it can still handle streaming or gaming from multiple devices which is all I really need. In terms of range, it can cover most of my house with good enough speeds for browsing the web but does run into a bit of trouble at the edges of its range. Overall it’s a great cheap router that you can set up and manage quickly, perfect for anyone who doesn’t need internet for much more than browsing the web and streaming off a few devices.
