This cable was exactly what I needed I had and external disc drive that I loved it worked great then I lost the proprietary cable that came with it when I saw this I was skeptical that it would work. What would you know in the end it works exactly like the original.

Caution: I suspect that many reviewers in fact purchased a different product, and their complaints refer to other brands and other models of Y-cables.

The Cables-to-Go brand model 28107 Y-cable works well for the purpose, the quality is good, and the USB connectors fit well.

As described, the cable is about 6′ long—but that isn’t as long as it sounds—measure how much cable you’ll need before buying one. 5′ to 6′ is ideal for me. But since the whole point is maximum power, you want to keep the cables as short as possible. 3′ Y-cables are available, and would be preferred, if you can use such a short cable–for example with a portable computer. Try not to use extension USB cables or adapters with a Y-cable—there will be a little loss of power with each connector.

The long arm (with the mini-B connector which plugs into your hard drive, or DVD drive, or scanner) is almost 5 feet long. Each of the short arms are about 1 foot long, for a total spread of up to 2 feet and so, should reach USB ports even on the opposite sides of some portable computers. Of the short arms, one is red and labeled “power only”; the black one is power and data. For most users, it doesn’t matter which USB plug plugs into which of your computer’s USB ports, as long as both are plugged DIRECTLY into your computer’s ports. If you happen to have both fast and slow ports—use the black plug in a fast port.

Since the whole point of using a Y-cable is maximum power, avoid using spitters with Y-cables. If your computer has only two USB ports, it would be okay to use a splitter for a USB mouse (or other data only or low power device) and the red plug of the Y-cable. If you need more full-power ports, a powered splitter (that has its own little transformer which plugs into an AC outlet) may be a solution. Even so, try to always plug the black plug directly into one of your computer’s USB ports.

My external DVD player comes with a short, two headed (Y style) power / data cable. Most external players come with the Y style in case you need to plug into two ports at once so your DVD reader/writer can draw enough power to operate. However, all my modern computers, whether desktop or laptop, seem to provide enough power for both reading (easy) and writing (a little more demanding) so the extra “head” on the stock DVD cable goes to waste, clutters up the space, or my kids plug in the wrong part of the Y and wonder why the DVD player is inoperable (only one of the heads moves data).

Hence, two solutions. This C2G (Cables to Go) slim cable, 1 meter long cable which is a straight cable without the Y head, or the

    AmazonBasics USB 2.0 A-Male to Mini-B Cable (6 Feet / 1.8 Meters)

. Since I don’t mind having a spare cable, I ordered both. The C2G is slimmer, lighter, and shorter; the Amazon is more robust and, of course, longer.

Both get the job done; I prefer the C2G for two reasons:

    1. I can shove my very compact Lenovo external DVD into a quart Ziploc together with the C2G cable easily, because the C2G is much less bulky.

    2. I sometimes use my external DVD player to watch a movie on a laptop that is (modern times!) DVD drive-less. So I just set the DVD player down on the sofa or nightstand and this new accessory cable is long enough that I won’t be disturbing the DVD player as I watch – there is enough slack in the cable. The Amazon cable is much stiffer, and transmits any movement in the laptop computer straight back to the DVD player. Not a problem with the laptop on a desk, a problem if you are using a

    Logitech Portable Lapdesk N315

    .

So for the very low price of this cable, you might think about replacing your stock DVD cable with one of these.

It will also work with other devices that use the Mini-B connector, although these are getting fewer and fewer. If you are not sure what the name of your connector is, look up USB on Wikipedia and they have easy to recognize photos.

My Amazon merchant was Amamax and they were fast and reliable.

C2G cable barely works so I used a different generic cable that works. When I tried using the C2G cable again, Windows/computer doesn’t even see it. While not very flexible, the C2G cable looks sturdy, so it probably defective. No return, no warranty, cheap enough, but is still a loss

1st off, it does not allow a charge to build in first party battery pack, just let it go for 24 hours and charge is 1/5th *edit: since later that night the day I posted this review the charge reached zero.*, yet it keeps the controller going all nights worth of play. It’s short, but I knew that when I puchased it, and.as for build quality, it fits well, but is so stiff it MAY short out if you bend it near ends, near zero flexibility. But it does keep me able to make due until payday.
