Best on the market! (end 2020). Better to have a heatsink on it.
My motherboard (msi x570 tomahawk) came with one, otherwise I would have bought one.
Look at the result in the image attached… Impressive!

Got this drive installed and Windows installed and I am now getting close to the speed specs after having to change a couple things. Please read my tips, it may help you and save some frustration and even maybe save you from returning it. To get that max speeds this needs to be installed in a PCIe 4.0 compatible motherboard with a PCIe 4.0 compatible CPU. I am using this in an Asus X570 Tuf Gaming Plus with a Ryzen 3900X. This also needs to be installed in the M.2 slot closest to the CPU which has a direct connection to the CPU, I initially had it in the bottom slot below the PCIe slots and that one is connected to the chipset which is slower, I was getting like half the write speeds at first until I switched it. You also need to download and install the WD SSD Dashboard so you can enable the Gaming Mode, otherwise again, speeds won’t be as fast. After those couple things, I am now getting closed to advertised speeds and I am happy.

If you want the fastest data transfer speeds go with this. As long as your motherboard supports PCI Gen 4. If you only have Gen 3 I would go with the SN750 instead for almost half the price at the same capacity. It’s not cheap but if you want the best, newest, fastest technology then you are probably the person to buy this.
I’ve watched some reviews and some of the other M.2 drives with similar speeds had caching issues that this drive doesn’t have. This drive does build up a good amount of heat in use so a heatsink is recommended. I used the one that came with my mobo and it seems to keep the temps low.
I’ve used Western Digital drives for years. I’ve only had one failure which I believe was due to water damage and that was on a mechanical drive that was years old. This is backed up with a 5 year warranty. I would also recommend downloading the Western Digital Dashboard software which allows you to see drive capacity, health, temps, and to update the firmware. There is a firmware update available for this drive which was done in seconds with no issues for me. At nearly double the cost of the 1tb SN750 you are paying more but getting double the read and nearly double the write speed.

If you are looking for a drive for your PS5, look no further. This drive is plenty fast and does the trick. There are other drives that are faster, but if you can’t get your hands on one of those then you will not be disappointed with this drive. And through my testing the speed difference is negligible. Lastly, I can not stress this enough if you are buying this for the PS5, YOU NEED A HEATSINK!!! I would recommend a double sided heatsink that will fit WITH the thin metal cover inside your PS5. It serves as an additional heatshield.

Went into the store to pick up a Samsung 980 pro but they sold out before I could get one so I thought I’d try this one the drive itself is pretty good but the dashboard software is just trash I’m rocking a 3900xt and rtx 3090 so I know my system isn’t the problem so for the same price I say go with the Samsung 980 pro because it has much better software to manage the ssd. Every time I try to launch the dashboard it will stay on this screen for hours

Works perfectly on the PS5! Loads games slightly faster(about 1-2 seconds) than the soldered PS5 SSD and that’s saying something because the PS5 SSD is no slouch! I do think that the current PCIE Gen4 is very pricey and need to come down but the performance is there.

I believe this is the type of ssd we’ll need to expand our storage on the PS5. 4.0 that reads at 7GBs & write at 5GBs. Should be able to keep up with the speed of the internal sdd. I hope I’m right but the price, ugh. Just keeps getting more & more expensive to keep up with technology.
