This drive is a great target for local Veeam backups and ad-hoc file transfers and is without a doubt the fastest external USB drive I’ve ever worked with. The attached video shows a folder with five large ISO & EXE files totaling 4.43 GB getting copied to the Rocket Pro in about 16 seconds, averaging around a 322 MB/s transfer rate. This is with a USB 3.1 port, so this ostensibly the fastest that the drive can go, but even on USB 2 / USB 1 systems the read rate off of the drive is outstanding.

The machined aluminum body of the drive feels solid and well constructed, and despite it acting as a heatsink I’ve never felt the enclosure as anything other than room temperature even after a 45-minute DiskMark stress test. I will agree that the included cable is not the highest quality I’ve ever seen, but it doesn’t feel cheap either. Having the USB A plug option is nice for full backward compatibility with older systems I work with.

I’ve shown this off to multiple co-workers (geeks, all of them) and they are all blown away with the performance at the price point.

This is and feels like a quality product, it does what it says on the packet, I reformatted it first then downloaded 200gb to it. The box it came in is sturdy to transport it with you without fear of it getting damaged. Well pleased with it.

I love sabrent products, only downfall is this comes as a complete unit and cannot be opened as it affects the warranty, bought separately doesn’t affect the warranty and it’s cheaper

I love this drive. I was originally skeptical about having/making a portable NVMe drive simply because of the enclosure – to actually achieve close to the theoretical maximum of 10 Gbps (=1250MB/s, the speed limit for USB Type C 3.1 Gen 2), the enclosure becomes the bottleneck since NVME drives can clearly operate much faster. What really worried me is whether the enclosure is reliable, since there are very few options on the market at the moment that have a track record (I’m looking at you, ebay).

Just a quick note; I used an AmazonBasics USB Type C 3.1 Gen 2 cable for testing.

The Sabrent drive that is housed in this product is capable of 3450 MB/s read and 3000 MB/s write speeds, while this product (formatted to exFAT and tested on a 2017 macbook pro) has achieved very respectable speeds for me of around 910 MB/s read and 850 MB/s write. While that seems like it’s a lot slower than it could be with an M.2 connection (and it really is), consider that this is almost twice the speed of a conventional 2.5 inch SSD that utilises SATA III (which in theory has a max read speed of 6 Gbps=750 MB/s and where in reality around 500-550 MB/s is achieved).

It arrives in a nice big metal case to keep it safe. Similarly, the drive’s enclosure is amazingly well-crafted from dense metal and is weighty (in a good way) – makes it feel very premium. Just don’t drop it on your foot or you’ll be screaming.

A final note for that one person who wants to use this drive for Native Instuments – your file system formatting makes a BIG difference as NI doesn’t play nicely with exFAT on this drive – it is VERY slow and is widely believed to be a software problem that has gone unfixed for some time (check the forums!). Fortunately, if (like me) you use both a macbook AND a PC then use FAT32 – it works very well. Just be forewarned – it obvioiusly won’t be as fast as having the data stored internally on a macbook – expect two or three seconds more when loading large patches.

So I have used this for a wee while now was I have traveled around. This surprised me the casing is metal and very durable. Data feels safe in it as it’s a non mechanical drive. The cable included is type c on one end and type a on the other, but has an attached type c concerter. I must say on offer this thing is a must for travelers. Can fit a lot of pictures on a 1tb drive.

So I must say I was a little dissapointed at first with the drive. It seemed capped at 380~440MB/s on the blue usb ports
And when I pluged it into a usb c port even worse! 24MB/s
Then I pluged it into a Red usb port…. Red 3.1 blue 3.0 …. Duh dummy haha ahhhhhhh…… Yea Red port 980MB/s it’s a rocket for sure. Heck it transferred so fast it locked up my raid 0 ssd drives (the intel raid controller has always been finicky on my z170 )

Now as for why the usb c ports operate at usb 2.0 speeds….. Not a clue probably deivers, but with the red ports I really don’t care.

Bottom line this drive rocks! 1tb @~1GB/s will buy again!

This SSD gives me speeds close to 1Gps on my iMac Pro both for Read and Write.

Looks awesome next to iMac and build quality is great.

Fantastic, if a bit over the top, packaging.

Overall highly recommended and much better value than Sandisk or Samsung SATA SSDs for the same price.

I use this product to backup my photos, videos, and as a time machine backup for my Mac. I like how small the drive is and how fast it can perform the transfer. I also like how sleek and refined the enclosure is as well as its ability to keep heat to a minimum. The SSD in here is a TLC NAND PCIe X4 NVME drive so it is not as durable as MLC NAND NVME drives out there but those MLC drives are significantly more expensive than this one. This does come with the newer phason 12 controller so it is pretty new. Several other manufacturers have a similar drive with the same controller, TLC NAND, and drive sizes. So the choice comes down to reputation and price. This drive and enclosure was pretty close to being the cheapest and (in my opinion) one of the most reputable. Using the included usb c cable i was able to get 1400 write and 2300 read. Much better than my USB 3.0 drives. Information transfer is super fast!

SB-1TB-NVME is unstable with constant USB controller resets and corruption on Debian Buster (Linux) via USB 3.0 ports (Raspberry Pi 4 both with and without a powered USB 3.0 hub). Using the USB 2.0 you get <12 MB/s speeds but more stable on Linux. I tried quirks/workarounds and powered USB hub, but no luck with current Kernel and firmwares (July 2019).

Works fine on Windows 10 64-bit. 840 MB/s speeds in file transfers. I tested for 60 seconds on my Macbook and had some issues which could mean it is incompatible with Mac (Linux) drivers as well, or the problem was from corruption that resulted from my failed Linux tests before connecting to the Mac.

In all my Linux testing and research (hours) trying to get this to work on RPi, I learned many things:
    1) This NVMe is actually two devices. First is the JMS583 bridge controller which is recognized as a PCI bridge, then inside is the M.2 SSD.
    2) Like other recent JMicron controllers, this one has some problems on various flavors of Linux (and Windows to some extent).
    3) You can’t update the firmware of the M.2 SSD, but YOU CAN update the firmware of the JMS583 bridge controller the M.2 connects to (read #4)
    4) To upgrade the firmware of this product YOU MUST VOID YOUR WARRANTY by opening up the enclosure and removing the M.2 SSD from the JMS583 controller. Simply remove 4 screws under the covers on the bottom of the enclosure, open it, and remove one screw that fastens the M.2 to the controller. Note, you need a star-like tiny hex wrench to remove these screws (I had one in my drill bit kit).
    5) I did the firmware update but it DID NOT solve my Linux instability problems. It takes to 2 seconds to flash. You can see the HW ID change in Windows Device Manager after the flash and re-power on.
    6) My SB-1TB-NVME purchased in July 2019 from through Amazon seller arrived with firmware 2.4.
    7) I upgraded the JMS controller to firmware 2.5 then 2.6 following the steps and download on this web page which I can’t link here due to rules. To get firmware and instructions, do a search for firmware-update-for-mydigitalssd-m2x-nvme-m2-enclosure-adapter in a search engine.

FW M2X NVMe M.2 Adapter Firmware Update 0205
    Firmware Version 0205 Change Log
    Increased compatibility
Fixed overheating issues on certain motherboard chipsets
Fixed disconnecting issues on large transfers

FW Firmware Version 0206 Change Log
Improved compatibility with 2TB/1920GB M.2 SSDs

All in all 3 stars since I lost hours trying to get this to work on Linux trying a powered USB hub, throttles and quirks. But it does perform very well on Windows.

It took foverver for this thing to register on my MacBook, regardless of whether I use USB-C or the adapter to USB 3. It is very inconsistent with regard to showing up when it is plugged-in. It did not come with any documentation, so I went to the Sabrent website. This model did not come-up in the search for a user manual so I opened a support ticket. Their response was: “I am sorry for the inconvenience, we are migrating information to a new server to better support our customers, this can take over a week so we will appreciate your patience and understanding.”

Almost three weeks later and they still haven’t made the manual available. They could have emailed me a copy of the PDF in that time.
