I have been using the Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard for 20 years. This latest version is my update to my previous Ergonomic 4000. There are some new buttons, some minor rearranging, but I have had zero problems adapting in these first few hours at work.

What I love the most is the quiet-key feature (I don’t enjoy the clack of mechanical keyboards haha), as well as the added bonus of the pause/play and skip forward/back media buttons!

The ‘replacement’ keyboard which is nearly double the price has less functionality, such as a middle scroll wheel. The function keys are crammed extremely tight above the number keys, unlike the 4000 series keyboard.

My N key constantly sticks where I have to prod it up even on day one. Microsoft has extremely missed the mark on this keyboard and this is my worst purchase for 2020 by far.

I would stick to the Microsoft Natural Keyboard 4000 and forget about this cash grab product, the quality is subpar, you get reduced functionality and it just isn’t a comfortable keyboard.

I can touch type which means I type without looking at the keyboard. This newer MS Ergonomic keyboard model makes it harder for me to touch type because of the flawed layout, as I keep missing keys that I would not otherwise, and find myself having to find keys sometimes by looking. But slowly my hands and fingers are getting used to the new keys positions and missing less, but some keys that I am very used to using like the Enter, Backspace, Home, End and Ctrl etc buttons, are badly positioned and are either too small and or require me to move my hands and fingers in a wider movement to reach. This is frankly annoying and the other model was definitely better which was the MS 4000.

So I’ve read a lot of the reviews on this keyboard, looked at the Logitech competition, tried without success to find a 4000 to replace my broken one; and ended up ordering this one anyways.

    The Good:
    – It’s better than a standard keyboard; I’ve been typing on MS Ergonomic keyboards since 1995 because my Dad has arthritis and was told by his doctor to try this out. He replaced our family keyboard and told the rest of us to deal with it. 25 years later; it’s all my family uses
    – It wasn’t terribly expensive. It’s not a $20 toss in keyboard from Dell; nor is it a $200 Logitech ergonomic keyboard (that still doesn’t have backlight / mechanical / anything really fancy besides their wifi features I don’t care for or need).
    – It came quickly from Amazon as expected
    – It was under $100
    – It still has positive lift in the front; which after getting it with the Wireless Desktop and then 4000, I can’t live without

    The Bad
    – The key location changes (moving delete, print screen, the menu key (which no one uses ever), were pointless. A wider ALT key would’ve been preferred
    – It has no backlighting, I don’t need this as I’m a 100% touch typist, but people seem to like it
    – Mechanical Keys / RGB would be sweet; but I know that’s not Microsoft’s thing.

    The Ugly
    – The wider layout mimics the sculpt keyboard, and probably uses similar moldings at the factory; but I prefer the tighter 4000 layout
    – Microsoft got rid of the 4000 wired for no real reason
    – It still doesn’t have great Mac support; thankfully 3rd party apps help make most of the feature keys usable

** Bottom line from a IT guy who’s been typing on Microsoft Ergonomic keyboards for 25 years and probably used every model there is in the lineup: **

Its not the 4000, it changes the key layout unnecessarily; it will take some adjustment; however if you want an ergonomic keyboard; and don’t want the laptop style keys of the Sculpt or the “gets dirty instantly” like the fabric on the Surface keyboard – this is basically your only option.

Not perfect, but it’s all we’ve got without eBay hunting for used options (gross).

On Mojave (sorry, can’t upgrade my OS yet) this is not being recognized by the mac as a keyboard. Karabiner elements ( a popular app for keyboards on Macs also does not see it as a keyboard). What this means is that it functions fine as far as typing but as for modifying/swapping keys (a common thing to do on Microsoft keyboards attached to Mac) it’s a no-go as of right now.

    Update:

I loved this keyboard at first but, after using it for a while now, there is a huge problem. Look at the right and left halves of this keyboard. Notice how much WIDER the right side key area is as opposed to the left side. The problem is your right hand has to stretch frequently to hit the backspace, =, underscore and so on. I’m a software developer and hitting these keys is a frequent thing. This has caused a repeated-use problem on the outside-right of my right hand. I’m selling this keyboard and trying out the new Logitech Ergo K860 to see if it works better. The other issue with this keyboard is it’s just spread out. This means you have to reach more which means more repeat use injuries, and I have LARGE hands. The other thing to note on ALL of Microsoft’s ergonomic keyboards is pressing the keys is kind of like walking through ankle-deep water. The keys should have a click-on and bounce back feel. These keys feel mushy and require effort. This makes my whole hand sore after a while. If you want one of these keyboards cheap, mine is for sale!

I am writing this review on this keyboard now! I had the Microsoft SURFACE ergonomic keyboard prior to this keyboard (the gray one) I never could get used to that keyboard. The flat surface of the keys never agreed with my fingers, the spacebar had an annoying squeak and the bluetooth was irritatingly slow to connect. With this keyboard the keys form a cup and my fingers land exactly on the keys I expect them to. I have way fewer typos and though the keys have more travel and feel a little more klunky than crisp I am able to type much much faster. I do prefer the chicklet style keys that are slightly clicker but I’m not going to get that key style with a cupped layout like this keyboard has. I also like that this keyboard is wired so no waiting for bluetooth connects. The wrist pad on this keyboard is very nice as well. I’m definitely “at home” with this keyboard, it feels comfortable and familiar without a huge learning curve. Thank you Microsoft! I would like to see backlighting on this and a tiny bit more crisp feel but those are not dealbreakers by any means.

    UPDATE:

Backlighting would be very helpful on this keyboard. Sometimes it’s difficult to see the Fx keys.

You’ll really want the Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Keyboard for Business (5KV-00001) or the Surface Ergonomic Keyboard… trust me on this one. The distance you have to press each key is simply ridiculous, the keys are really really deep so you’ll fumble through typing quite a bit. Also, it’s slightly larger than the Sculpt, so your hands have to move more to type which I don’t think is a good thing.

I’ve had and tried nearly every Microsoft ergonomic keyboard out there… as someone who’s been typing for about 40 years now, you should have an ergonomic keyboard if you type a lot. But stick with the Sculpt or Surface versions as you will be able to type much more quickly without the travel time of pressing each key.

I love my Microsoft Sculpt wireless keyboard, and I was hoping this would be a wired version of the same, but it is NOT that. This keyboard is more of a (worse) successor to the “Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000” which I have also used and loved until the much better Sculpt was released. While this keyboard seems to be the successor to the wired 4000 model, the layout of this keyboard is so much worse. Why is there a delete button right above the backspace?!!!

    Don’t buy this.

I was using Microsoft 4000 ergonomic keyboard and it gone bad. I was looking for a replacement. Since 4000 is not available, I went with this model. This model is not at all good. As soon as I started using it , I started getting pain in my shoulder and had to stop using it. Since I had no option , I started using ordinary keybaord and it is much better than this expensive kb.

I’ve been an ergo keyboard convert since my first Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Split Keyboard (the old white Model 59758) I bought back in 1997. I then graduated to the 4000 pro around 2001. Since then, I haven’t found another satisfying split keyboard design to my liking until I bought this Microsoft LXM-00001. I love the soft yet distinct action of the keys. Not as harsh as fully mechanical, but not as light as silicon keypads. The pitch and angle of the ever-so-slightly concave keypads provide the best positioning I’ve found. And there is something about the positioning that feels just a hint better than the old 4000. The wrist pad has a slight concave roll to it, as well, which fits my hands like the palm of a glove. Reaction time is pristine. I give this a straight-up five stars all around because, for what it is, it simply doesn’t get any better. My only wishes would be for a future wireless version and/or a version with backlit keys. (Note: Adesso makes a backlit ergonomic keyboard that is absolute crap! The key pads have 70% response at best and the action feels very sharp and sticky). I will say that if you tend to settle for nothing but the best and prefer the split ergonomic design, the Microsoft Sculpt is the gold standard of wired workhorse split ergonomic keyboards. However, you will end up paying at least double the price of this LXM-00001. The LXM-00001 is without a doubt a worthy alternative to the Sculpt.
