These are great mics and I’ve used them for years. Thew updated mounting is better than the old band system, though the fact that it sticks out isn’t great for portability. I’m always afraid of crushing it …. That being said, I’ve yet to break it. The sound is okay for this small compact mic. I generally use it for rough b-roll sound or as a reference mic for audio syncing. If you’re looking for quality sound, I would not recommend for primary sound for interviews unless you will be very close to the subject.

I have always used external microphones when I am filming anything on a camera, the internal microphones are just not good enough for anyone who takes filming seriously. This microphone is more expensive when compared to some of the other ones on offer, but I think that it is money well spent. The sound quality is excellent, allowing us to capture audio from a distance. You just have to make sure that the microphone is pointing at the audio source as it does not capture audio well from the side or back, but this microphone is designed to do that. Overall it’s worth spending that extra to get one that will perform well out in the field.

Used for filming an amateur Shakespeare film child-only-cast production, on-location in town parks and countryside during a relatively wind-free UK summer. The sound captured includes a fair bit of the background tree rustle, but the children’s voices come through nice and clear. The attachment to the DSLR shoe works well, though I was not able to fit this arrangement into my Zhiyun Crane V2 gimbal in the ‘handle-up’ configuration I was using, so I mostly used this mic for static tripod-based shots.

I would have been happy with this product if it weren’t for the power switch falling off. The small strip of plastic (that sits on top of the electrical switch and allows you to actuate it) fell off, initially unnoticed, presumably while I was turning the mic off for the lunch-time break in filming – when a tiny piece of plastic like that falls off in the grass, it’s lost forever. When filming resume it led to a delay of several minutes while we tried to find something that could reach the switch inside to turn the microphone back on – that kind of delay is *not what you want* when half-a-dozen children have just been plonked on set, ready to give their lines.

It has very good sound indeed – I use it with my Nikon DSLR on a tripod. As is well documented on YouTube reviews, to avoid hissing sounds you need to use the Rode’s 20db setting and turn your camera’s mic gain down – I have mine set to 7 which is about half way on a Nikon. The sound picks up really well and is very clear when I’m making YouTube videos. The other thing I found is that it’s better to have the microphone mounted on a bracket and not on the camera hotshoe – this is to avoid the mic picking up autofocus noise from the lens motor. You could always turn off autofocus I guess but brackets are so cheap to buy on Amazon you might as well do that.
You don’t get much in the box but then you don’t need much – it’s a microphone at the end of the day. But a very very good one.

The rode videomic pro is a improvement over the built in mics on a dslr or videocam,
It is a good mic but your subject needs to be close to it to get the full benefit and sound quality from it.
It is very good the closer you are to it, more depth and clarity over the built in mic on my dslr but the quality gets less and less the further away you are from it.
The battery cover is fiddly to get back on and is not the easiest to see which way to put the battery in.
There is a small sticker on the inside of the battery compartment showing which way to put the battery in but this could be easily missed if you did not know it was there, there is also a image on the back of the battery cover showing battery position as well. This mic is more suited for interviews and vlogging etc, it will pick up noise from behind and sides but this will not be as clear as what is in front of the mic as this is what it is for. If you were looking for a more ambient sound of the area you are in then the rode videomic stereo would be better for this purpose. If you purchase this mic you will also need to get your self a 9v battery as there is not one supplied with the mic, overall i am happy with this purchase.

I bought this while heavily discounted. I would not buy it at the RRP. The audio quality is good, better than one of the budget brands? I haven’t had the chance to compare.. I will say that most of the materials are plastic, and it feels cheaper than the pricetag. I imagine this is for weight saving reasons as a lot of people using this will be carrying their dslr around all day vlogging, but I’m not sure if it would last if I dropped it or treated it roughly, which I could easily do with the other Rode products which tend to be full metal bodied.

One part I do not like is that there is a little clip under the rycote mount to attach the cable, and the cable often falls out (you’re meant to attach the cable here to avoid sound issues if you knock the cable during recording.

I would recommend this if you are happy with the price, however it might be worth trying a cheaper option as well.

Yes. So so satisfied. It is what they say. Look on you tube and test and review it’s basically what i got. I am a 25 year verterian audi guy. Its not as good as mt three thousand dollar tube mike but by far does its job. Capture people talking in what sounds like it was recorded in a studio

Btw the reason it needs a battery is to by pass the camera mic pre. Part of why its so clean. I want to record some sound effect with it. Cant wait.

I am very happy with this mic now. At first I was not at all because the above information and videos that I watched before purchasing led me to believe that the mic comes with a lithium battery. it does NOT. Further reading said to use 2 AA batteries. that did not work at all. Please visit the official Rode website. They have all of the information that you will need if you have a question. It clearly says to use a 9v battery. I did just that and it works. Getting the battery door closed is a bit tricky and that is the reason for my lower star score under “easy to use”. once I got the battery door closed everything went perfectly. The sound quality is really good. I did a test using a video camera, on each of the settings. My voice was clear and I was able to remove some of the background noise from the air conditioner. I highly recommend this mic. the price is really low for what you get. I am happy to say that this mic resolved my sound quality issues.

So, the product mount felt a bit fragile when I first examined it, but keeping in mind that I’m not going to bash the mic setup (and my camera!) against walls, I soon realized it was fine.

I had read people complaining about putting the battery in, so I carefully read the instructions and was able to remove/return the battery door on an EMPTY CHAMBER pretty easily. When I tried it with a 7-volt battery inserted, it became amazingly difficult.

After some thought and examination, I pulled off the RODE foam cover for the mic, exposing the battery mount area fully. Once I did that, putting the battery in and closing the door was easy. Kind of unfortunate that this is the easiest way to deal with it, but hardly the worst thing in the world.

Had to dial back the gain on my Nikon D850 to about 8 in order to eliminate the hiss (left the attenuation setting turned on), and then boosted the RODE by using that +20 switch. Sound was excellent, clearly audible from 10-15 feet away in a room with a ceiling fan running along with central air blowing – even better, the fan and air sounds really didn’t register on the video. Sound sources from the side and behind were muted well in my tests.

Good mic, excellent for the price. No, you’re not going to pick up a conversation from 50 feet away – get a wireless system if that’s your goal. But if you’re videoing within 20-30 feet, this thing works fine.

I bought and returned this microphone (Rode VideoMic Pro R) and I intended to use it with my Canon 80D. I also own the Rode VideoMicro and kept that one instead.

    Pros:
    – Self powered condenser microphone with boost switch allowed me to turn down the volume on my camera so that there was less noise introduced from my camera’s pre-amps.
    – Tighter pickup pattern compared to the Rode VideoMicro which means less ambient noise bleed
    – Great shock mount to remove unwanted noise from handling the camera

    Cons:
    – For me, the microphone was a touch too big. The new version with the Rycote Lyre mount is slightly longer and wider than the old version.
    – While there is an included windscreen, it is very ineffective and doesn’t do the job that the VideoMicro’s dead cat does. If you plan on using this outside, you will need to purchase the dead cat for this separately and that will also add size to it.
    – While the signal was hotter and cleaner, I found that even with the low-cut filter on, the sound was a tad too muddy for my taste. If you are going to record music or something that requires good bass response, then this mic is for you. If like me, you plan on only recording vocals, I found that the VideoMicro had more shimmer and brightness to it that lent well to adding clarity to vocals.
    – While having battery power means a hotter signal, it also means that you need to carry an extra one in case it dies.

    Conclusion:
This is a great mic and definitely captures a richer, and more detailed range of sounds than the VideoMicro, but I found the audio to be a touch muddy for vocals. For the added cost, and size, I felt that using the VideoMicro was plenty good enough for the work that I had planned. This mic is great, I just hope that this review will help you to decide if this mic is the right mic for you.
