Be sure to keep the box for storage. Even looking at these online, I was worried about the rods getting broken. – the pointer on the number/color spinner as well. It turns out the reels are wood, and the rod itself is a wood dowel about 1/2″ thick, but there’s still enough bits of plastic that the line is strung through to make me worried about breakage.. At least the fish are thick sturdy wood. I’m glad I’m giving them to a 2-year-old, because, if he was much older, the 18-inch rods would begin to look under-sized. I also find it odd that the fishing line itself is so short it only extends about 7 inches from the tip of the rod when fully reeled out (the magnet feature adds another 2 inches). That makes the experience closer to pointing than fishing and reeling one in. We did have fun with this on Christmas day. At 20 months, It took him a bit to learn which end of the pole was the magnetic part. 🙂

In my experience, it’s unusual for a Melissa & Doug product to fall short of expectations, but this one is a stinker. FIRST, the spinner does not work at all. SECOND, multiple product photos — including one on the product packaging — show children standing as they use the fishing rods. In reality, the string on each rod is so short that kids have to sit or kneel to reach a fish on the floor. It’s blatant false advertising, and a huge disappointment. The trust I’ve always enjoyed while purchasing Melissa & Doug products is gone. Sad.

I was excited about this product as my kids are getting into the idea of fishing. Unfortunately, I did not read all the 1 and 2 star reviews before purchasing. I saw this was a Melissa and Doug product and assumed it would be very similar to the video of the kids playing with the product on the description page. After Christmas, I found out that I should have read and heeded the warnings of other customers. This product is frustrating and boring for my kids as they can’t reel the rod to bring the fish up/down. One rod came with string that allows for two inches of movement, but the other is only an inch. The kids can dangle the magnet above the fish until it attaches and then turn about half a turn to “bring the fish up.” My kids are almost 3. It is not physically or mentally fun or challenging for them. They have only used it three times and have forgotten about it. The short rod also came untied the second time my daughter used it. We tried to tie it back, but the string is so short and slippery, it keeps coming untied.

I know I’m in the minority here, but the sweet two years olds and five year old boys I spend my days with love this toy! I feel like it’s great for developing concentration and manipulating tools to accomplish a task. They have a ton of toys, but I think this is one of their favorites. As far as the string being too short, I honestly think I would be concerned about their sister being strangled if it were longer (she’s a year old). I honestly think it’s a safety concern to have a string too long. And I am able to hold the pole and use it to pick up the fish..it’s entirely possible they changed the product based on reviews, but either way, I think it is perfect as is.

Bought it for my 4 year old and her little brother plays with it too. It comes with a bag that everything fits into. Great quality as usual, great brand. Wish everything was this well designed and built.

Very good quality product. The magnets work well, the wooden pieces are solid, and the rods actually work.

Is the fishing line longer now or did I purchase a defective one?! I purchased this in July and my daughter rarely plays it since the fishing line is incredibly SHORT. It only unwinds 2 inches which is absolutely pointless.

We bought this for a 3-year old relative and he’s pretty happy with it. His older brother and sister actually do go fishing and this little game helps him feel that he’s part of it all as well. The child is happy, but I’m just a little bit disappointed with the quality of the rod and reel. They are a bit flimsy and the fishing line is extremely short. He’s used it several times and the bobber has already come apart. No big deal, but it is annoying. A three-year-old can be rough with toys so keep this in mind if you buy it.
It’s okay as a counting game, but this needs an adult to participate. A toddler will just want to “catch fish” than fool around with numbers.
Overall, a decent toy but be aware it won’t take much rough handling from a toddler.
A good companion gift was
Curious George George Goes Fishing

I think it is supposed to be a game but my kid just love to pretend she is fishing. Amazing quality. Great buy.

Really disappointed. I bought this same fishing set 3 years ago when my oldest was a toddler. It was a great set but 1 of the poles broke a few months ago. So I ordered a new set so both my boys can play. The new version of it really falls short. There is no bobbers and the strings are very short. You can’t even fish with them. The only high light to the new version is the fish are thicker then they used to be. All in all I’m very disappointed in the quality. Pictures show 3 year old pole verses the new pole. Old pole actually works like a real fishing rod.

One of my daughters and my favorite! My daughter (2 1/2 years old) first was introduced to this game at boonshoft museum. I literally had to carry her out of the room because she had become obsessed with the fishing! The little poles can be reeled in and back down again. The fish are easy to catch and stay attached while you reel them in! Eye hand coordination, lots of verbal communication, counting, color recognition and more! My daughter already has her numbers 1-10 down and the majority of colors but the fish come in different sizes and colors, which is great for teaching bigger and smaller and colors which we still do for grouping practice.
