I just got the Echo Show today. Supposedly it is a brand-new upgrade from a previous model. I wouldn’t know since I have two Echo Dots and have never had an Echo Show before. I like the screen’s ability to show my security cams (although I am having problems with Alexa not recognizing two as cameras but as plugs for some reason, while the other two (exactly the same brand and model) are recognized as cameras and work just fine. A big annoyance to me is that it will randomly put things like “Alexa for Your Day” instead of the home screen. How do I prevent this from happening? I do not want suggestions from Alexa. I want it to remain the clock and weather screen until I tell it different.

I generally like the overall alexa components , this package with security cameras seemed like a good buy. It appears Amazon was in a humerous mood when they labled these cameras “security”. After a little practice I was able to dismount a camera from its $18 mount in under a millisecond. That is correct folks these toys snap into the mount none too securely. Anybody who wants to obscure themselves from the camera woth one hand while using the other to snap off the device. I have fast internet which supports multiple video streams. With nothing else connected it takes 5 seconds for a shot to show. If you ne3d to mount from the ceiling you are meant to use the tool they provide as a jury rig angle. The mount snaps into the tool and the tool into the cam. Oh, and there is only one in the box. Need two cams on ceiling ? Too bad. And it wobbles. I am fairly certain that the first good straight line wind we get here in florida will dismount these cams ending my displeasure. Do they work? Yeah they detect motion. Just like every other wireless cam out there. Nothing to say about the echo show you can read all about it under that product listing. If it was not for the lousy mount system might get to 4 stars. I gave it three for b the show. Shame on you Amazon.

I am sure most folks would love this type of device, but it is not really ready for prime time. All day, it flashes a screen telling me there is a ‘Hot’ Weather event. The hottest recorded here was 80 degrees. Hardly an extreme weather condition for just about anywhere. With that and many other annoying news events, I wanted to remove it from the feed. It stated that it would no longer be shown to me. Lo and behold, a few minutes later, it showed the weather event (we are now at 78 degrees and dropping fast.) and those annoying news stories. It is also very limited to showing better events for my compulsive amazon shopping habits. Of which it keeps telling me the same events over and over with no way to dismiss them. Glad it was only a Hamilton. Photos can possibly be shown but you need to upload your photos to a cloud. We live in an age where home NAS systems are common and would love to stream them locally. Very intrusive liberal news you can’t get rid of and still a horrible weather system visible (always incorrect)

Key Upgrades from Show 5 (1st Gen, 2019) to Show 5 (2nd Gen, 2021):
–NEW 2 MP CAMERA: Upgraded from 1MP in 1st Gen. Better picture in video calls. –REMOTE VIEWING: Use the Alexa app on your phone to remotely view the camera of the Show 5, so you can check on your home while you’re away. There is a big notice displayed on the Show 5 screen that says it is being remotely viewed. –NEW COLORS: Now available in Deep Sea Blue, Glacier White and Charcoal. Previous version was either Charcoal or Sandstone.
Downgrades: -No 3.5 mil Audio Jack: Removed the ability to plug in external speakers through a 3.5 mil audio port, the port on the back of the Gen 1 (2019) version is no longer there in Gen 2 (2021)
My Opinions:
This is a VERY slight upgrade to the previous version. The difference in the camera quality is noticeable, but honestly the Show 5 screen is too small for me to comfortably use it for video calls anyway. Actually I prefer the older Show 5 (1st Gen, 2019) overall, because I could plug in my old PC speakers for some better sound. I also can’t see myself ever using the remote view feature on my Show 5, as it is not in a central location in my house. Overall, it would be hard for me to recommend upgrading to the new Show 5 (2nd Gen 2021) if you already have the old Show 5 (1st Gen, 2019).
If you are trying to decide which size (2021) Show to get, I would suggest going with the Show 8. It has a much better 13MP camera with auto-framing, and the screen is much more suitable for video calls. It also has a faster processor, adaptive color, and motion sensor Routine activation. At the current prices, ($85 for new Show 5 and $130 for new Show 8) the Show 8 seems like a much better deal; especially if you ever want to do video calls.

Super slow!!! Don’t buy this if you want quick response. I expected it to be FAST with quick response. Front camera picture quality is from early 90’s. Screen and sound quality is acceptable. A BIG NO & NO BUY, if you intend to use with BLINK CAMS. Good buy only to experience Amazon system but not good to base of your smart devices with this echo show.

Update: Amazon Customer Service contacted me. The fee is from Blink, not Amazon. I just wanted that to be clear, as I was confused myself. I have no comment on the Echo Show, as it never left the box.
returned after I found out about the monthly fee for the cloud. $3 per camera/ $10 for 3.
