After consulting with a chemist and a geotech engineer, and doing some testing, it appears this is probably not made of solid granite as advertised. It appears to be an aggregate of stone and binder. Rubbing pestle against mortar produces a fine grayish-green dust that smells like cement. The chemist recommended that this be used for non-food items only.

If you’re on the fence about buying this to grind your own spices, just friggin do it, it is absolutely worth it! I use this to grind coriander seeds, cumin seeds, szechuan peppercorn, black pepper for my slow cooker curry and the result is amazing! Just make sure you follow the instructions once you get it!

Took it out of box. Gave it one rub on the inside and handle fell apart

When I first bought this item it came broken and they sent us a new one free of charge which was super nice! But it is so hard to clean ! And everything smelt like granite from the bowl and the tool. Not what I was expecting.

Exactly as described. I like the size & depth of bowl, it is ideal for grinding small to medium portions of ingredients. The weight is heavy however perfect for no movement or sliding.

I just received my mortar and pestle from Amazon today. I opened the package to inspect the items to make sure there was no damage to them from the shipping process. While both the mortar and pestle are not broken, I did however find 2 large mouse/ small rat droppings in the bowl and at least another three within the bubble wrap package on the outside of the bowl.
I find this extremely concerning due to the fact that this is supposed to be a food safe item that is a porous material, and also due to the fact that it can not be properly sanitized. No amount of bleach or boiling water will be able to get into every pore of the mortar to sanitize it. The box was not damaged and did not show any signs of a rodent getting into the amazon or the products packaging. So the contamination would have to had to have happened when it was being made and or packed at the manufacturing site. I don’t know if this is a one off instance or if this is an ongoing problem.
Due to concerns, we will be returning this item.

The only thing I disliked about my ChefSofi Mortar and Pestle Set, was the crushing of the rice to prep and season it. I had a hard time trying to grind the rice up higher on the inside. I must have done it right, because crushing termeric hasn’t stained it.
I use it every morning, for crushing the Ginger and Termeric, for our health drink.
I love that the company sent me an email with the detailed prep and seasoning instructions, as well as an ebook with tons of Italian recipes.

I’ve owned any number of mortar-and-pestle devices over the years, and this one is simply the best of the lot.
It’s sturdy and solid and very easy to use. Clean-up is a breeze.
I could not be happier with this thing, and I foresee many years of use to come.

EDIT: Apr 2 2018. They fixed the issue I pointed out in the review below and sent me a free mortar and pestle with the updated design. Thank you, ChefSofi. Raising to 5 stars from 4 stars earlier.
Very well made, good balance, deep. Perfect amount of grit for items wet or dry. I think I will be using this for a very long time.
I could have given it 5 stars if the pestle was designed a bit better. The bottom has a pointy tip which is not ideal for grinding dry things. It should match the angle of the mortar itself as it increases the surface of the impact area for crushing or muddling. Also it could have been a little bit bigger — both in girth and height … for efficiency and more comfort especially if you are non petite hands.
I am from India and have used a mortar and pestle for a long long time. I highly recommend this product, but I also hope they improve the pestle design.
Please follow the instructions on cleaning — do not use soap of any kind.

Based on reviews I was expecting to love this, but I’m a little disappointed. The weight and materials are very satisfactory. It’s solid granite and provides a good base to really grind up spices or grains or whatever else you need it for. The problem lies in the relative proportions of the mortar and the pestle. The mortar has high walls and the pestle is fairly short, which means it is difficult to really get a full grip on the pestle for heavy grinding without busting your knuckles on the walls of the mortar. The back end of the pestle is also pretty squared-off which makes it uncomfortable on your palm. I suspect I’m not the first to comment on this since the one we received was somewhat unevenly rounded off by the factory, leaving it less square but also even shorter. I would suggest looking for a mortar/pestle combination with a bit longer pestle and a rounded back end.

This granite mortar and pestle set is of very high quality, more so than I was expecting, even having previously read many of the reviews here.
This is a great and practical kitchen tool for crushing and grinding dry and/or wet ingredients. A spice grinder or coffee grinder can work very well for dried herbs and lighter, woody type spices, but it will not cope well with hard grains, seeds, salt, nor even particularly well with some other dried ingredients such as whole hot chilies. For moist ingredients such as fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables, and liquids such as oil and vinegar, you would need something like a food processor as well. This mortar and pestle set can serve as both, and being used via a manual process, lets you adjust and grind things to your taste and consistency preference.
The mortar and pestle are rough cut or ground and have a lot of fine grip on the surface, but the cut is very even without hardly any signs of cutting marks nor divots. The bottom of the mortar is polished smooth except for the engraved branding in the middle, which is nice since it means it’s less likely to scratch the surfaces of what you’re using it on. Also, a fairly thin 3M nonslip foam rubber sticker is included to put on the bottom of the mortar, if you’d prefer.
Make sure you follow the directions on “seasoning” (breaking in) your set as there is a lot of surface dust that will grind off. You may also want to start off using some water in the bottom of the mortar – just enough to cover it – and grind stone on stone, pestle against mortar, rotating each and covering the interior of the mortar as you go, then rinse, dry, and followup with using dry white rice as per the instructions.
Also, I wanted to mention that you more than likely won’t want to wear rings when using this, since the rough, hard surfaces of the mortar and pestle can scratch them up pretty easily.
Overall, I highly recommend this set. Mine arrived in perfect condition.
High five!

I use this to grind and crush vegetables and spices. It’s especially good at crushing dried peppers and leaves.
