I recently discovered Matterial after using Reformer for years. I wanted to try the “extra matte” look of Matterial versus the regular matte look of Reformer, so I picked up a jar. In terms of function, I could not find any difference between these two products. They hold equally well, and they have the exact same appearance (at least, to my eyes).

The only difference that I did notice was the very strong smell. I don’t like overly powerful smells, so this product was an assault on my senses for the entire day. The smell is similar to Ax body spray, and reminds me why I don’t use body spray. I really like the subtle fruity smell of Reformer and the other products in the Mitch lineup, so it’s unfortunate that Matterial went another route.

Amazing hold on this product. I went through about 15 or products over the past 5 years to find something truly special and this is it.

Finish is quite matte, though you can get a little more texture or shine if you a splash a little water in during/after styling. Alternatively, the Paul Mitchell “Reformer” styler will add a little more texture/shine, but its hold is not as good.

No strong scent (a positive aspect in my eyes).

The product itself is tacky in consistency, making it a little hard to spread evenly across your hands, but the finish is such that as long as all the important places got some, virtually no one will be able to spot areas that received a little more product than others. A little practice will go a long way in upping one’s application skills.

Leave the American Crew, Axe, and every other styling product you can get at the drugstore or grocery store. Paul Mitchell products and Matterial are light years better.

Definitely works as advertised. Gives hold, lift and noticable volume with zero shine. It’s somewhat water soluble. If your hair is too damp, it won’t take, bit even after 2 shampoos, you can still feel it on your hair.

All in all a decent product, though. It’s way more spreadable than other clay products, but beware, it dries quickly, and holds that way, so you need to style quickly. You won’t have a lot of time to fiddle with it

I’ve tried a few hair products. 18.21 works great but has a strong scent. Not a bad smell but not universally liked. Nonetheless, very strong scent. Like, roll down your windows and don’t bother wearing cologne, strong.

But it was truly matte. It was sticky, sure, but washed out easily from my hands and hair. I appreciate that. Lastly, it had enough strength to hold my waves and curls without looking too rigid.

Perfect if it wasn’t so smelly!

So I’ve tried a few other products. All claimed to be matte but all made my hair look greasy like I hadn’t showered for a week.

    Bad.

This product actually looks matte. Finally! So glad to found this product. Also, like 18.21, this product is easy to wash off my hands and hair. It is sticky too but I don’t mind since I have wavy and curly hair which doesn’t appreciate being overworked. Good hold and volume too.

I read that others said this product was too strong of a scent. I have a different experience. It’s subtle. And I quite like the scent. Not tobacco, cream soda, or some sort of food… Which I found bizarre. Eucalyptus isn’t as bad, used by some others, but this Mitchell’s scent is pretty nice. Kind of reminds me of cologne. Not cheap but nothing spectacular. Its so subtle though. The other products I’ve used you can smell all day. I think the scent on this goes away after an hour.

Anyway, I love this product. Just had to show some love. If you’re not into that greasy look which is a bit old school aesthetic, and want a truly MATTE finish, this is it.

18.21 is also a good product too if you don’t mind a strong scent. A tad more matte IMO.

I’ve been using the Matterial hair clay with shoulder length hair, then trimmed down to neck length, and now a hard part combover style. It’s non greasy, easy to spread and style damp hair and when the hair and product dry it has a rock solid hold.

Your hair can get marginally wet with Matterial and still hold its shape. I run daily, and get fairly sweaty, the top and sides of my hair do not move until I’m cleaning up to go back to work and I mess it up with a towel. Easy to fix with damp hands and restyling.

The scent is masculine and not overpowering like other products.

A little bit goes a long way. highly recommended.

So I’ve used this product for over a year now, would normal buy it at my local Sportclips… here’s what I’ve learned..

    PROs

    – Won’t come out.
-Even after exposed to water it’ll still harden up in your hair (obviously not after shower)
    – Doesn’t get all oily when exposed to heat
    – Doesn’t give you dry head
    – don’t need a lot

    CONS

    – Very strong, and hardens fast, so best to use it while your hair is a little damp so you can spread it all around easier.

    – Restyling isn’t possible unless you fully wash it out and start over.

It’s overall very well… I have a very naturally straight hair growth pattern and not much of anything has ever worked for me, but this… this works very good… haven’t really found anything better

I have used Mitch Reformer for quite some time now and I love it. I was running low and so I thought I should order another one. Since I’m always looking for the best deals I must have clicked on one of the “recommendations” on the bottom and it took me to this product. Since they both looked similar and the price was cheaper, I clicked buy. Once I received the item I quickly realized my mistake. I figured it couldn’t be that much different so I decided to give it a go. Boy was I wrong, it’s nothing like Reformer. The thing I dislike the most about this product is that you can’t run your fingers through your hair without them getting stuck. It’s going to be a long while before I finish this tub. I wish they hadn’t designed the label so close to their other product.
