I used the old version every day. It had a great peanut butter flavor. The new version doesn’t have much of a peanut butter flavor. It has moved lower in the ingredient list. It also has a unpleasant after taste now, so sad.

Of the many supplement powders I’ve tried, Amazing Grass’ Vegan Organic Plant Protein Blend has the most authentic peanut butter taste. When using other “peanut” flavored powders, I’d normally add a dollop of the real thing capture that flavor. It’s not needed here. In fact, this tastes decent just mixed with water, but really shines when blended with the milk of your choice, or incorporated into a smoothie. I recommend the latter because there is a slight gritty mouthfeel, but it is much better than most plant based protein superfood powders I’ve had. Suprisingly, both my wife and I don’t detect much if any Chocolate flavor. That didn’t bother us though. I suppose it is overwhelmed by the peanut butter flavor and is something to bear in mind if you want chocolate. Or perhaps it is more of a raw cacao flavor present. Interestingly there are no peanuts included, only flavoring. Anyway, it tastes wholesome and healthy.
Speaking of which, this Plant Protein Blend is more than a simple protein powder. It is closer to a meal replacment and is an overall healthy drink treat for just about any occasion. That fits because each scoop is a whopping 42 grams and contains the equivalent of 2 cups of fruits and veggies. Once I fished the scoop out from somewhere in the middle of the container, I was pleased to see that there was very little settling and that it remained mostly full. That’s good because there’s only about 18 servings per container, coming out to $2.86 each. Still, considering the nutrient density and quality, organic ingredients, that isn’t outrageous. My tub expires 07/2023 but will be finished well before then.

I’m primarily on a plant-based diet and as a result I often try to supplement my protein needs with protein powders. I do prefer a pea protein over a whey as it’s a bit easier on the kidneys although I like both. I have friends whose preference is just the opposite as they find pea protein to be on the gritty side. There are a full 42 grams of protein per serving, almost my entire requirement for the day. I added some of this Amazing Grass Organic Plant Protein Blend to my yogurt and it mixed quite well.
I didn’t add a full scoop, which provides that massive protein infusion, but rather eyed it. I don’t do smoothies so can’t say if this will mix well but I suspect it will do so easily enough. The chocolate peanut butter taste was quite good, however, we’re not looking at a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup here. The taste is slightly muted, if you can call it that, but very good.
When I opened up, the protein powder there was a bit of clumping to the powder, but it wasn’t an issue. I could smell that peanut butter! It’s got that all-important USDA Organic seal and non-GMO, a must for many individuals. This Amazing Grass protein powder is an excellent choice for the vegan or vegetarian.

Mad Max –
-This brand seems pretty popular, and I do like that it’s organic.
-And I was really looking forward to trying peanut butter chocolate, one of my favorite flavors.
-However, after trying this, and several of other products by Amazing Grass, I find the ingredients sub par, the taste bland, and the price very high.
-The flavor is very subtle, I was pretty disappointed, the dominant flavor in here is definitely pea protein, with just a hint of the other things. You have to add chocolate flavor (either chocolate stevia or cocoa powder) and either some peanut powder or a dollop of peanut butter to get the desired flavor.
-It’s also a bit mealy. I personally would not drink it straight, without dressing it up. It leaves an aftertaste.
-In terms of price, it’s currently available for $53 per tub with 18 servings – which works out to roughly $3 per serving.
-That price is almost 10x what my normal brands cost. I normally pay between 33-50 cents per serving for organic protein and/or vitamin shake mixes.
-I do love the organic ingredients that they list – chlorella, hemp, spinach, barley, etc. HOWEVER, they don’t say how much of each is included. I have a bad feeling that it’s mostly pea protein.
-Plant protein such as pea protein is simply not as effective, not as digestible, as other forms of protein. In the body it doesn’t get delivered where it needs to go.
-Besides the bland taste, it doesn’t dissolve well – it left lots of clumps on the bottom of my glass, even after blending.
-It’s not very keto or low carb friendly.
-Just based on price I won’t be reordering this item. But given the other issues, this is a pretty hard pass for me.
