As far as transformations go this one isn’t as cool as the others (we have bumblebee car, heatwave fire truck, and boulder bulldozer). For Blades, all you do is twist the blade and the arms fold down/legs go together (kind of…the legs don’t mate well in helicopter form). The hook we got only fits in helicopter mode – the pegs won’t fit in his hands for robot mode. His face doesn’t even remotely look like Blades from the show. I’m giving it 3 stars as I’m sure my kid will like it and the plastic is very sturdy so it is unlikely to break when dropped. If you’re going to buy just 1 get Heatwave – even if he’s kind of a jerk – the transformation is cool and he’s lasted over time.

We have the Heatwave and Chase that go with this Blades. They are both pretty sturdy. Unfortunately Blades is much flimsier and easier to break. My 3 year old had it for less than an hour and already has issues. When you transform him it is too easy to accidentally push the arms to far back which messes up his helmet. We were able to fix it but I imagine it’ll keep happening. Plus legs/wings don’t stay shut when transformed.

My son was *super* excited to get this, but the mechanism broke shortly after he got it. When you turn the knob on the back the legs, arms/ wings, *and* face shield are meant to change position. Now, only the wings and legs move (see video). The blue face shield is always in the up position. Sucks that it broke so quickly because it wasn’t misused — it was played with and then stopped working. My hope is that we are sent a replacement.

The quality and ease of transforming this toy BY FAR surpasses all of the other Rescue Bots Academy toys. I have gotten almost all of them for my son, Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Medix, Chase, Wedge, Heatwave, Whirl, Hoist, Boulder, Hot Shot, etc. Blades definitely has the best quality, design and is the easiest/most fun to transform. All of the other ones are good and have held up very well but Playskool really knocked it out of the park with this one.

I purchased the Amazon exclusive Rescue Bots and my only regret is that I only got my son 3 of them when there are more characters available. He has several that we purchased from other big box retailers and these are SO MUCH BETTER! These are a little bigger, easier to transform and you can just tell the quality is so much better. The plastic material is shiny, they stay together better when they transform, they have an accessory and the colors seem brighter. We will be getting the other characters for his birthday in March. Highly recommended!

This transformer works just as described. We didn’t know how complex would be too complex for our 4 year old, but this transformer was certainly too easy. He plays with it a bit, but would have liked a 4-6 step transform process rather than the 1 step that this toy requires. Other comments that the blade hit the back end of the transformer are true. No clue why they didn’t raise the propeller a bit or simply shorten it 1/2″ to avoid this issue.
So not a bad toy based on the description, took away 1 star for the propeller issue. The simplicity should have been sussed out by us before buying it, but worthy to note for others purchasing this item.

My 3.5 year old’s rescue bot collection is nearly complete… partially due to my own interest in playing along with them. In my son’s eyes he likes them all… the newest one he likes most. Here is a list of the order of my favorites and why:
1. Blades – blades is the only one that has a moving object (propeller) and also is the only non-ground bot, so it’s fun to have him a part of any collection to change things up. He’s also very easy to transform and his transformation looks good. 2. Heatwave – this was the first one we bought and was a great one to start off with. The way the ladder pulls up to transform is very creative and cool. fire engines are cool and a must for rescuing, so Blades and Heatwave together are really all that’s needed to make the perfect rescue. His transformability can be difficult for a young one because the arms don’t always want to stay down without holding them both down at once. 3. Hoist – when heatwave pops a tire or gets stuck it’s nice to have hoist around to pull him out of trouble. Hoist also looks pretty bad-ass and bulky as a robot. His tranformability is similar to Heatwave. 4. Medic – medic is the only one that has a button that activates the transformation. I think as a robot he looks pretty silly, but he’s useful to have when someone gets hurt 5. Chase – not always able to incorporate him in our playing. My son really wanted him, but after getting him he didn’t get a whole lot of time with him like he did with the others. 6. Boulder – super easy to transform, which makes it kind of boring but good for a 2 year old. He doesn’t really help out much except for pushing things off our coffee table that I keep telling my son to leave alone.
* Dinobot – my son just got the Heatwave dinobot for xmas. It doesn’t transform, but my son loves it. It makes noise, which is pretty darn annoying, but it sure entertains him. I didn’t think it would be as fun due to not transforming, but it’s fun to use as an accessory to our missions.
All in all, every one of these are made very well, will last through lots of toddler abuse, fun to take in the bath, and are entertaining.
