Usually, I reserve reviews until I have had a thorough experience with a product. Sadly, I’ve had no luck even trying to use HDD to its full potential!

This is the second/replacement HDD I received from Amazon after the first one failed right out of the box. So I was initially happy when it was very happy to see it was finally recognized when plugged in, then initialized it under Disk Management in Win 10 (it did not automatically appear in my computer). But during a crucial files transfer of 1 TB, connection failed and I was never able to recover or view the copied files again.

The HDD was not recognized on multiple PC’s and so I went into Disk Management and discovered it was categorized as “unknown.” So I initialized it and was given two options: MBR or GPT. I chose each option once, but each time, I received the following error message: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. I tried to use multiple ports (USB 2, USB 3.0 and USB 3.1). In addition, I used a different USB connection cable that came with another WD HDD and it also produced the same result.

I was able to shuck the drive from the enclosure and find a White label WD80EMAZ drive which is nearly identical to the RED labeled drive that is sought after. Performance is great. I already own 3 WD 8TB red drives and 2 WD 8TB white drives.

There is a possibility you could get a WD RED drive. If you get a white label drive and if you shuck the drive and put it into your computer and it detects inside the enclosure but not inside the computer, lookup the WD white label 3.3 pin mod. You’ll have a few options to get the drive to stop power cycling. Solid drive and you won’t regret it.

You can either purchase this drive or the WD easystore drive for the same type. I believe the WD Mybook has the same as well.

    Saludos, espero les sirva la siguiente información;

Had been using it as a backup drive. The drive failed within three months of purchase, Data inaccessible.

Edit 5/23/18 RMA process was painless, easily accomplished online. Used normal RMA process; Turnaround between old drive arriving at facility and new drive shipping out was 2 days. All told, about a week. Will see how this drive shakes out over the next few months.

Edit: 8/28/2018. The RMA Replacement for the drive has also failed, almost exactly three months after delivery.

Purchased the product from my home here in Australia (where I live) via amazon’s Australian website but only to find it arrives with an American power adapter!
I have unfortunately had to spend money on a converter to allow it to work in Australian power sockets.. this is far from ideal and likely voids any warranty etc..

I should not of assumed they cater for overseas country needs even though it was Australian domiciled website.

Edit April 2021: These models are now the WD80EDAZ variants, these are air filled and not helium. There are reports of these drives running at 7200rpm and not 5400rpm. They also run about 5c-10c hotter than their helium counterparts. If you don’t plan on shucking these, it’s ideal to put a fan on the enclosure to keep the drive cool as it can reach 60c under load. No issues with mine in a server chassis that provides air cooling for my drives.

    Original review:
These are great for shucking (helium variant inside). The warranty from Australia is a little unclear however and the price needs to be readjusted to the sales that occur in the US. Contact WD after registering your drive to receive a free AU power adapter.

Edit: I contacted WD to query the “out of region” warranty. They informed me that the drives will still remain under warranty and that you can claim the warranty within Australia.

I purchased the 8TB elements drive in an attempt to consolidate a bunch of data I had on a series of smaller, older drives. Once I had all the data copied over, I intended to buy another and raid it so I had a copy of everything; always have a backup and all that. I guess I did take a small risk not immediately buying two of these drives so I never had any period without a backup, but I just didn’t have the money at that point to double down.

Here’s the full timeline breakdown. Bought drive, it sat for a month before I got around to using it, transferred about 3TB of data to it, let it more-or-less sit for a couple of months (unplugged on my desk) with the occasional removal of a piece of software or movie/music (not used hard, I’d estimate less than 3 hours of use after the initial transfer), plugged it in about 3 days ago and moved some pictures to it, plugged it in today and it returns uninitialized without recognizing any of the drive space. It’s been less than 5 months since I bought this drive. Attempts to interact with it return with “the request failed due to a fatal device hardware error.” I’ve tried several different cables to see if that was the issue; it was not.

Well s***. I’ve done some data recovery before, it’s part of what prompted me to get this drive and start the process of consolidating and backing everything up. But before I go hog-wild stripping the case of, running diagnostics, and trying to recover everything myself I figured I’d at least give WD customer support a call to see if they can do it. I’m not really looking for an extra project right now and, for me at least, this will be a project (maybe someone more knowledgeable would have no issues).

Anyway, called customer support. They were friendly. When I asked about data recovery, they kindly informed me that it would cost $400-700, had to be through one of their contracted data recovery companies, and came with no guarentees. When I asked what I could do to the drive, they kindly told me that almost anything I did would void the warranty and they wouldn’t be able to replace the drive. They also, very nicely, told me that any drive I got in return for this one would actually be a refurbished drive and may or may not have cosmetic wear, may or may not have factory packaging, and had no guarantees of having less than any certain amount of drive hours on it. That’s right the “warranty” replaces your drove with another, already once defective drive! “Sorry the drive we sent you broke, we’ll happily send you a different drove that also broke!”

To summarize: my drive broke after five months of light use and proper treatment and then their customer service told me they’d be happy to send me a second hand drive in exchange for the POS one they sent me in the first place, with no assistance at all with recovering any data.

I’ll ultimately end up keeping the drive, stripping it out of its case, and seeing if plugging in directly to the drive gets around the “hardware error” (though I doubt it will). Amy replacement is as good as worthless as I have no faith in it lasting more than a few months; I’ll just have to take the loss.

You can do what you like with your money, but I’ll no longer be giving any of mine to Western Digital. Crooks.

UPDATE: I took the drive apart and it interfaced directly with the HDD with a $16 SATA adapter I have; had no problem accessing the drive. The failure was entirely the fault of the Western Digital enclosure.

Not impressed! Ordered 2 – 10TB WD Elements HDs, package contained two WD Element HDs – 1 labelled 10TB and 1 labelled 6TB. Called Amazon and arranged for replacement of 6TB HD. Opened 10TB box and installed drive but it only registered 3.64TB of available storage. Initially thought it was my older system that was the problem, until I tried it on a Surface Pro 4, which showed the same 3.64TB HD. I then checked to P/N and it was a 4TB HD, so I had a 4TB drive in a box labelled as a 10TB drive. Next time I’ll check the P/N when I take it out of the box, before installing.

I bought this because I was tired of my tiny 240GB hard drive being filled. The constant struggle of deleting my favourite video game to install the newest $80 microtransaction riddled mess, only to re-install my favourite game (Minecraft – it’s 2019) has driven me mad. Until now. 6TB of storage means I can have all the newest games, as well as a slew of dank memes, without having to ever delete them. Now I can keep all the EA games I buy but never play after I realize it is just a slot machine disguised as an RPG. It’s also great if you do any high-quality 3D rendering. I completed a 50GB 3D scan of some work stuff, rendered it, modeled it, and slapped it in this bad boy so I can take it back and forth from work. Always great when you can store your work with your play, it’s a shame I can’t store my dinner in it, too.

I run a small business with a group of friends. We ordered 18 of these WD 10TB Elements External drives so we can each have additional storage to our work computers. The reason for these specific drives is because they were reviewed as easy to set up and use and have high reliability.

They arrived in 6 packages, each with 3. I opened the first package to begin testing them before taking them all to the workplace. I connected it to power, plugged in the USB drive, and pressed the power button. Nothing. Nothing happened. I don’t have the best technological computer skills so I wasn’t able to troubleshoot what was wrong with it nor did I want to do anything that may hurt my chances of a return.

I was told these drives were very reliable and I get one dead on arrival. This is very disappointing. I would not feel safe using these at work or giving them to my editors to store precious photos and video footage. There was nothing to indicate that the drive had been damaged during shipping. That just means that WD put a faulty drive in there and didn’t do enough testing.

It appears to me that these drives are actually used. I opened the other 5 boxes and this suspicion seems to have been confirmed. All 18 packages were repackaged by Amazon and sold as new. Please view the first image I upload to see this. It is clear to me that they do not care for their customers enough if they are willing to sell re-packaged old goods as new for full price.

Luckily, Amazon has a generous return policy so I am returning all of these for a full refund. I don’t even want to bother checking the other 17. I will take my business elsewhere and find a better product.
