Armitron makes the best affordable all steel digital watches.

This little Armitron sport retro watch brings back a lot of memories. I didn’t actually have an Armitron, but I had several similar Casios and a Seiko back in the 80s, and always loved this design and size.
In-person, this really is a classy-looking watch! It has a stainless steel case and band, with an adjustable sliding buckle, which makes it very easy to perfectly-size it to your wrist. The crystal is acrylic, which I believe is what their original crystals were, and it should be very durable. Acrylic can accumulate light scratches over time, but it generally will not shatter.
All of the buttons and timer functions work like they should, and it arrived with the correct day, date and time programmed for the US Eastern Time Zone, and the second time was correct for the Pacific Time Zone, where I live.
The only, and I mean only flaw in this watch, as others have said, is that the light is basically useless. When you press the button you can see a green glow on the left side, but it does not make the display readable in darkness. That said, from what I remember I don’t think the lights were ever very useful on digital watches in the 80s. In fact I still have a G-Shock from the mid-1980s, which still works, and the light on it is virtually useless as well. So as far as this review is concerned, I’m not even going to consider the light. In fact in a way it’s vintage-correct, in that it is useless. 😁
According to my scale this watch weighs 2.8 oz, but does not feel heavy to wear. However that heft, for a small watch like this, confirms to me that it is all stainless steel. I think part of it is that I can make the band fit so well, it doesn’t shake around as I move my arm. In fact the band is very attractive and comfortable, and the buckle closure and sliding adjustment both work very well.
So this Armitron Retro Sports Watch gets a big “Vintage ’80s” 5 stars from me. A very cool gift item, that comes in a nice tin, and I think it’s a super value for the asking price of around $35! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Armitron Sport Retro Digital Chronograph Bracelet Watch 40/8474BKSV comes in a nice steel tin and features a classic digital chronograph movement in an attractive stainless steel watch case and bracelet. I wore similar watches but with a plastic case and watchband for years while serving in the U.S. Navy on submarines. This model looks great, with a 34 mm case which I find much more reasonably sized than the clownishly large faces on many modern men’s watches. This watch has the usual chronograph functions (12 or 24h time with 2nd time zone, day/date, stopwatch with split time, alarm, and hourly chime), but no count down timer. Water resistant to 165 feet per markings on the watch back, but the manual cautions to avoid pressing buttons while the watch is submerged. The claimed “backlight” does not work well at all. Instead of a backlight that illuminates for 3 seconds as the included manual says, the actual light is a dim side light that only stays on when the button is held down and only allows me to maybe see the hour in pitch darkness, so mostly just a waste of battery power. Maybe the manual is actually for a different model? The 8 mm thick stainless steel case is also fairly heavy, with the watch and bracelet weighing in at 81.4 g (2.87 oz), which I definitely notice on my wrist much more than the plastic-cased watches that I wore in the Navy. Given the weight, I probably won’t wear this watch all day very often, but it looks great on my wrist when I go out for an afternoon or evening event.

Substantial all-metal watch with a nice retro look. Certainly an excellent value for the money.
Comfortable band. The backlight is weak, just like the competitor’s retro digital watches with similar appearance.
I enjoy both manufacturer’s watches (I own examples of each), and with this one you know where the extra money went when you wear it.
Money well spent in my view if you’re in the market for higher-quality materials.

This is armitron going back to their roots and making a comeback. Its cool that they are doing it right. Other brands went the chrome plastic route while armitron went old-school and brought back full 316L stainless case digital watches with 50M of water resistant. I also love that armitron stuck with a midsize case like the originals from the 1980s. Overall this is a big win for armitron!

This watch comes in a nice black and gold tin (which is a nice surprise at this price-point). This watch is an alternative to a digital watch that you can find just about anywhere for around 20-ish dollars. However, this watch does things a little bit better. First, the material is a huge bonus. The strap and the case are stainless steel. It also has 50 meters of water resistance. As for functions, this watch has a stopwatch, alarm, second time zone, calendar, and a light. All of the functions work great and accurately, with the exception of the light. Similarly to the popular digital watch, this one uses a kind of dim light that sits to the left side. In full darkness, it works pretty well. In dim light, it does not do that much. That being said, this is worth the price increase as you get a nicer and more durable digital watch.
