Let me start by saying I had really high hopes for this product and was very excited to receive it. Here is my experience … After receiving a damaged rower the first time, I had to return it and eventually received a functional rower. This took many weeks and several calls to customer support and most notably the difficult task of re-packing the massive item and shipping it back to Echelon, they do send you a new box but unfortunately they don’t send you the right Styrofoam so it’s a pretty big struggle.

The equipment is good, seems well-built but I am concerned about how it will last over time as the warranty is only a year.

The big problem I didn’t know as the Amazon website did not mention anything about it, is that you are locked into their app. The rower does not work without the app connected to the fitness equipment via Bluetooth AND you must be logged in to an active account/subscription.

Unfortunately the app is very buggy, clunky, and customer support is not super awesome. The instructors in the workouts are pretty dry and some are downright boring just like they’re plain white backgrounds and they’re dated music they use in them.

IMPORTANT: Without an active paid subscription to their app AND the app connected to the equipment via Bluetooth the rower provides zero resistance and is completely useless, so buyer beware if you want to use this product with anything other than Echelon’s own services.

Unfortunately for me I am past the return window, mainly because of the lengthy exchange process to fix the original damaged unit, so I am stuck with this thing unless I want to sell it. Buyer beware.

Easy to assemble. Very quiet. Works great. Yet I regret buying and considering return. Why? Because the only way to see resistance level or anything is by using the app!! Extra $40 *a month* and means I can’t watch other videos. The app won’t even record in the background!!!
Didn’t imagine a premium product would make this terrible unfriendly design choice.

3/25/22 The shortfalls are the cheap RF resistance controller. It craps out and then the rower is useless. I had problems when I received it, and again I’m having problems. Get a rower with physical/mechanical controls. Do not buy this rower.

    When first received:
When the rower arrived, the resistance control did not work, making the entire unit useless. It’s stuck on zero, and because the device uses magnetism there’s no way to manually/physically adjust the amount of resistance without a working controller. After many calls and emails, I finally got them to mail me a replacement controller piece. I RECEIVED IT TWO MONTHS LATER. During those two months, I was emailing with them once a week. The replacement piece arrived, but would also not communicate with/interface with the rower.

Then I emailed demanding a full refund, and for them to get this hunk of metal out of my house. Then I got someone to send me an entirely new rower (something that they had been unwilling to do in the past). The new rower arrived in about 4 days and worked perfectly. I boxed the defective unit up in that box, emailed customer service, and FedEx came and picked it up (at no cost to me).

So now I’ve got a working rower that I like, but it took: spending $1,000 on the rower and $400 on the yearly app subscription, and about 2 1/2 months of stress dealing with the customer service department.

That being said, the rower works great. Some things you should know:
You have to add a device (preferably an iPad or tablet) to see any kind of readout.
The resistance control will work without an iPad, but it just beeps when you go up or down; there’s no way to tell what number or level you are on. With the tablet, you can see all kinds of information: resistance level, calories, distance, etc.

But in a couple of weeks, doing just 20min a day, 5 days a week, I’ve lost about 7 pounds, so that’s pretty good.

First I’ll start with you do NOT need the app OR the echelon fitness subscription to use this rower. In fact I never use the app and never subscribed to the fitness classes. The only functionality you lose is the ability to see what resistance you’re at (instead just know it always starts at 1 and it’s easy to just count the beeps as you increase so you know where you’re at) and what your pace and stroke rate is. If you don’t need that, don’t worry about their app. If you are interested in pace, stroke rate, and resistance, the app itself with NO subscription WILL suffice.

Now that said, I really like this rower. It’s almost silent, air resistance rowers are probably more realistic but I was worried about lots of noise spreading in my old building. This rower is silent on the flywheel, the only noise is from the movement of the seat and the foot holders squeaking a bit. It’s very possible for someone to be rowing and someone else to be watching TV in the same room. It’s very solid, not a lot of plastic, and feels great. Assembly was relatively straightforward and not difficult, though I would recommend having two people, it’s definitely possible to assemble solo.

Circling back to the app, it’s a little janky and overall I would rate it as poor. If you don’t pay for the subscription the only thing you can do is a “free row” where it tracks your time and pace and the like. If you pay the $40/month you get some classes and the ability to row to a video of someone out on a river. The river rows are a nice background but really I’d rather just watch Netflix or something while I’m rowing instead. I found the classes to be alright, the music was not to my taste and overall production value was mid range at best. I didn’t subscribe past the free trial. Now I use Apple Fitness for $8/month which I find much better or just watch Netflix on my iPad mounted to the rower.

I did a lot of research and for a beginning rower looking for a good home workout, high quality and not too expensive, I think this is the top pick. The ability to just mount a phone or tablet and put whatever you want on while you row is a step above most with built in screens only accessing their own app. Some will brick without internet or an app, this one works fine without either.

Overall highly recommend, all but the most serious rowers looking for a quiet machine won’t be disappointed.

    Update 1 year later:
Still love the rower. Would not buy the more expensive Rower S with built in screen. Original review was for their simpler Rower with no screen, just a phone/iPad mount. The machine is slightly louder now as the band moves in and out of what would be the flywheel on an air resistance rower. It’s still much quieter than an air resistance rower, but louder than first purchase. This is after over a year of pretty heavy use so not terribly unexpected. If you can find it (looks like Amazon only selling the Rower S now) I’d still have to recommend this machine.
