Updated review: I bought this on prime day and saved it for the start of our school year. It was defective, but Amazon made it right which I hugely appreciate. THANKS AMAZON! The replacement works flawlessly and was received quickly. I never heard back from the Learning Resources company, which sours me a little. We are typically pleased with the brand, but it’s unfortunate they don’t stand behind their products.

This is a great concept, but it doesn’t work. We received a defective one that only makes sounds but no movement. Tried to contact Learning Resources directly but haven’t received a reply. What a waste of money. 100% DO NOT RECOMMEND.

We had so much fun with this before wrapping it! We gave it to a 5 year old for Christmas, but it was not a great hit right out of the box Christmas morning. He kept wanting to use it like a remote control vehicle and it doesn’t work that way. After several days of playing at home he got the hang of it and loves it! He can use it now and do simple coding but there is so much room to grow with it as he gets more experience with it.

A very well thought-out piece of kit. Good potential for learning whilst having fun. The little robot appears robust and works well. Suitable for bright 6-year old.
There is no steep initial learning curve and there is potential for learning to develop through exploring increasingly complex programming and exploring the other features such as ‘line following’. I think the possibilities for fun and learning will develop further with collaborative involvement.

This is a great ‘learning’ robot and our kids love it. Very sturdy and able to take a good knock, it keeps them interested when learning to program the toy.
The robot however does not have a ‘free control’ setting which lets you play with it like a remote control car… in stead it has to follow pre-programmed route which the child needs to input via the remote control. This is no problem in itself as it develops the childs thinking skills as to where and how the robot needs to be programmed to go a particular route, but a free driving setting would have been a bonus so they could just whizz it about on the floor trying to avoid obstacles without having to program it beforehand.

Not super impressed. We can’t get the eye lights to turn on and it just seems like bad programing. It doesn’t follow directions well (even when we make sure our hand is away from the sensor on the remote).
I bought this because of the many reviews praising how straight forward and easy to use it is and we have been wrestling with it l Christmas morning and all we have is a disappointed 5 year old and a robot that won’t do what we tell it to.
    Very disappointed in this product.

I bought this for my 7-yr-old for Christmas. He has been resistant to other “coding” games like the Robot Turtles one, and I was a little worried that the big wording on the box saying “coding robot” would turn him off, but thankfully the remote control aspect and the dancing light show won him over to give it a try.

I’m including two pictures that I think help understand how the robot works. On the bottom it has a switch between two different modes.

The first is “line follow” mode where it detects a line and follows it – you can draw anything you want on paper and it will follow right along. Haven’t done this yet, but it would be super fun to get out a big roll of newspaper end paper and make elaborate paths for it to run.

The second is where the coding comes in, and where the remote comes in. The remote is very clear with big easy to understand buttons. My kiddo, so far, has just made random codes – pushing a bunch of buttons then being delighted with the surprise of what it does. I think this is a phase that will become boring and naturally lead to him wanting to have more control. I’m looking forward to seeing this progression!

This toy is adorable and our 5 year old LOVES it. Make sure your batteries are fully working. He will turn on and make noise but if your batteries are not new, he will not move and seem defective. If this happens, change his batteries.

Botley 2.0 is such a fun and inventive way for kids to learn about coding! In my house, STEAM is very important. And with us having been stuck at home for months, with seemingly no end to it, this is a great addition to our education at home!

Both my 7 and 9 year old have a blast with Botely 2.0 — and they have no clue they are actually learning something really useful and important. I have even learned some a thing or two from Botley 2.0! If you are looking for a screen-free educational activity for your kids, Botley 2.0 is it!

I purchased this toy for my daughter who just turned 5. She absolutely loves playing with Botley and the coding is very straightforward and easy for her to understand. She loves that she is able to program different codes to turn Botley into a frog, train, ghost and more. I love that she is able to learn how to program things in a sequence and use if/then logic when playing. This is a great toy for children who love to learn about technology, and I love that it’s a screen free activity that encourages children to use their thinking cap and imagination during play time!

My son initially passed this up in favour of other toys but once I showed him how it works and explained the concepts with the supplied cards he loved the challenge. He enjoyed finding the not so ‘secret codes’ too. There’s quite a lot of variety to be had with botley from maze style runs, ball capture, obstacle avoidance and multiple objectives for more challenging scenarios.

Whether this toy will stand the test of time remains to be seen, but as a means to get the kids away from the phone and tv right now it’s great !

My kids (ages 4, 7, 9 & 11) have all been having fun playing with this robot. It’s easy to set up and I love how even preschool aged kids can use it (no reading necessary). All you do to program the robot is press the directional arrows to control the robot’s movements. The set also comes with flags, obstacles and fun tiles to make courses. Great STEM toy and intro to coding concepts. My older kids were able to do more complex functions like if/then statements and there is a short manual that explains everything and gives example challenges. Highly recommend!

The video on the Amazon page for this item (LER2941) shows the robot following black lines on cards laid on the floor. No such cards were provided. This is misleading. The cards should not be shown on the video if they are not part of the product.

I love Botley and I was really hoping my 6 yr old would too but it hasn’t been the hit I was hoping for. Botley has so much potential but it is perhaps missing a slightly better user guide to help with some play ideas.
The manual includes instructions but these need to be fully digested by an adult (or child who can read) and then translated back to the child who will be using Botley before you can really make the most of him. All absolutely doable with time and patience but the task did take the shine off for my 6yr old who really just wanted to play. Im still not entirely sure how to make the most of the items that come with Botley, I’m sure we’ll get there but definitely recommend digesting the manual before giving this as a gift!
We’ll also be looking at how we can safely store Botley, a case rather than a box would have been better packaging to keep him safe from harm!
