They are awful. Nice colour but the ink leaks and smudges everywhere. Have had to stop using.

Purple has been my go to color since high school. My love affair with purple began with the Bic Cristal but has come to rest with the Papermate Profile. I use it for everyday writing, but it also worked beautifully through years of college and countless nights serving tables at restaurants. The Profile isn’t a pen for the meek; its bold stroke is for those who want their writing to stand out and proclaim, “Here I am! Read me!” The pen’s barrel is wider than your typical stick ballpoint pen and has the cushioned grip for tons of writing and no fatigue.

    Pros:
Bold line shows up well and glides when writing
    Retractable
It comes in many awesome colors

    Cons:
The bolder line makes it extra smudgy for the lefties
Can leave little blobs when the ink builds up on the side of the pen nib

    Would I buy these again?
Yes, I would and have. Again and again and again.

Absolutely fantastic pens – smooth writing, rich colour, lovely to handle. Would recommend to anyone looking for a quality pen at a good price.

    I love these pens!
The ink is smooth, bright, and dries fast. It takes a few seconds to dry, preventing smudging which is great for drawing and writing with.
It’s comfortable to hold, and the pens don’t leak which is a bonus. The material It’s made from seems strong so these shouldn’t be able to break easily.
    Will definitely buy again.

These are terrible I am so disappointed. These pens immediately skip and feel like they are losing ink. The colour is not bright and they do not feel sturdy. I really am sorry I wasted money as they are not returnable either.

I bought the 8 set and the 12 set. My credit card had a promotion years ago where I got 5% back on everything for a period of time, so I stocked up on many things, thinking since I pay my bill off every month, that is better than savings interest (duh). So I found a box of 6 sets of these papermate profile ballpoint retractable pens, and because you have to flick a little ball off before you start writing, the ink was still solid and not dried out. I have since purchased Zebra Z-Grip pens (set of 40), and Papermate Inkjoy (both these and Zebra were also ballpoint, not gel pens), and now I remember why from now on it’s Papermate Profile or bust! One person wrote a comment that is true that I never thought of. If you write small and neat these might have too heavy of a tip for you, but I use them for search a word books and when I write it is bigger, more rounded bubbly letters, and these are perfect! They also have a nice size and grip so I don’t suffer fatigue. Also, I’m left handed but I don’t hook my hand around like some lefties, but still, I have not had any trouble with them smearing or getting on the side of my hand from drag. I think the ink lasts a nice amount of time, but because these are 1.4 MM tips you might notice that the pen runs out quicker than a pen that is only a 1.0 MM pen (probably the same barrel/ink quantity).

These pens write really smoothly and are really easy to write with, but as a lefthander, I have dealt with smearing ink/pencil on my papers almost all the time!!!! and it’s honestly so annoying,

Unfortunately, these pens smear ALOT!!! My side of my left hand always end up covered in ink, and the worst part is that the ink on my hand can transfer onto the paper and onto my white desk.
I really wish they didn’t smear because of how easy the pen writes.
Alsoooo on like two of my pens the ink was really blotchy, it wouldn’t write smoothly and would usually end up not being able to write a part of a word.. so I just use those colors for annotating with shapes/arrows.

    TLDR: THEY SMEAR!!! 🙁

When writing fiction I go for the 7″ x 10″ Japanese import notebooks (Apica B5 ruled notebook, Tsubame B5 Ruled notebooks or the Kokuyo Mister notebook B5 or sometimes the more glossy Kokuyo Campus notebooks).

Let’s face it, for whatever reason, the nature of a notebooks writing surface matters. And the pen we choose might matter even more. But pen choices are as varied as there are tastes. Some like the extra fine ballpoint, some the fine ballpoint while others might fancy the Bold ballpoint pens. All depending on what you want — thin or thick lined writing. Again, this goes in tandem with the nature of the writing surface which too varies from rough, hard, normal to near-glossy surfaces (like the Kokuyo notebooks).

This is a pen review (for a BOLD ballpoint pen at that), so let me stay on point (pun not intended).

To give the review a measured context, I’d need to stack different brand pens side by side to give anyone reading this a visual imagery of what a 1.6 mm pen looks like versus another 1.6 mm pen from the same brand but of a different model version. I also threw in a 1.4 mm ballpoint into the mix.
They are: BIC Velocity 1.6 mm RT pen, BIC Atlantis 1.6 mm RT pen and a 1.4 mm Paper Mate Profile. For those not too familiar with what a BOLD 1.6 mm or a 1.4 mm means… it’s the width or thickness of a the line drawn by the said pen. Same applies for 1.0 mm, 0.7 mm, 0.5 mm, 0.38 mm.

The bigger the size, the wider the bore. Thus there is no way you can exclude the issue of ink blotting, bleeding, or even streaking (these do not streak). Though this is relative to the kind of paper you write on i.e. rough, smooth or gloss.

I used 2 types of writing surfaces to demonstrate how the ink of the 3 brands appear (see pics). One is from a Japanese import paper MUJI Notebook (tan/beige color) the other is the bleached white of MEAD two ring business notebook.

    IMPRESSIONS:

COLOR — In terms of vivid BOLD blue color, I give it to the BIC brands. They are ahead of the Paper mate Profile. Not to say the PP is bad. No. It’s been my go-to pen for story telling/writing up until now.

FLOW — In terms of the smoothness of writing … it’s pretty damn close. I would give Atlantis a very marginal edge over the other 2, with the Paper Mate Profile & BIC Velocity a near dead even draw. None of them skips or stutters or “scratchy feeling” when they’re going.

STAIN/BLOT: This is where, as I earlier mentioned lies the “curse” in the midst of the blessing. The larger the ballpoint, the more likely to blotch. Now the paper mate at 1.4 mm does not blotch. So, I give it to the PP brand on that one. But at a “huge” 1.6 mm … something had to give (I’m sure if PP had a 1.6 mm model it would blotch too). Now, it’s not as bad as it sounds. I only notice this for Atlantis and Velocity when the pen makes first contact with the paper. Once you get to scribbling along it’s smooth sailing. SUGGESTION: To mitigate against this, just wipe tip with a paper towel before writing. But if this is something that’ll bother you then I suggest you stick with the Paper Mate Profile.Or alternatively you go down a notch to Medium 1.0 mm or Fine 0.7 mm ballpoint pens.

The Atlantis — from my own impressions is the most blotch prone when compared to Velocity. Paper Mate Profile is the least prone and thus takes this one for the win.

These are a definite recommend. But it will come down to individual needs when choosing.

Like I mentioned, I included pics (please overlook the bad handwriting).

Hope you found this review helpful.

    UPDATE: 1/22/18
The blotch is enough to cause some frustrations when using the 1.6mm pens on very smooth or glossy paper. So, I’ll take Paper Mate Profile over the other 2.

    UPDATE: 04/14/17:
Just bought my 3rd packet of Paper Mate Profile 1.4mm RT pen. Thta tells you how good this pen is. ‘Nuff said.

In general, I love pens! I have way too many of them. In fact my husband groans and shakes his head when I find a new pen or tell him I need a new set of pens. I can’t help it! While i’m always looking for new colors, thickness, and type; these pens are yhe ones that I always always have on hand! I may have another set on my desk that i’m trying out, but these are in the cupholder always ready when the new ones don’t work out like imd hoped. These write smoothly, the ink dries quickly and doesn’t smear, and they feel good in your hand. These are not fine tip (which i’m not really a fan of, too scratchy), but they write much smoother than regular ball point pens. And they hold up in your car during 115* summers; whereas other pens would dry up or explode.
