I am so happy we purchased this for our home. We cut the cable cord, and use Netflix, HuLu,Vudu, and some extra channels to watch on demand (I gotta have American Horror story every Tuesday!) And use an antenna for local channels. This is all we need. I highly recommend downloading vudu to your Roku, there’s a ton of movies for free, and some you can pay for to rent or watch like Apple tv. There’s an excellent selection of horror movies on vudu as well. Was skeptical about buying a refurbished electronic device but was extremely pleased upon opening the package. It looked brand-new, and came with fresh batteries . All you need which is not included , is a basic HDMI cable. It’s extremely easy, turn your tv to HDMI source and voila! It’s there. I have two very minor negative comments to make, 1. Since this was refurbished , when I plugged it in to the tv, it was still connected to someone’s account. Their apps were there, name, Email, and probably more but I immediately checked YouTube to learn how to sign them out. You need to do a factory reset and you’ll start fresh. So anybody who is selling one, be sure to do a factory reset unless you want someone to have access to your account and the possibility to make purchases! Second thing i would like to mention is the awesome headphone jack into the remote kills batteries quickly. Everyone has told me to get rechargeable batteries. Makes sense. I found this out the hard way by falling asleep twice with headphones in. 2 full batteries lasted 2 days. Now I’ve learned my lesson, they last about a week with me watching tv late after my partner goes to sleep. These minor details don’t affect the 5 stars.
I also recommend downloading Pluto TV. There is a huge selection of free movies, as well as regular live shows. I watch the cooking channel which has old iron chef reruns and other cool cooling shows, lots of music channels, a whole channel of fear factor re runs 24/7. Its truly a great free app! Live News channels as well like CNBC. Hope this review helps you see the pros and cons of getting a Roku, and the pros of buying from this seller. I would have thought this was brand new when it arrived. Photo is from the app Pluto TV on Roku Premiere , it shows the tv guide which goes to full screen by pressing a button.
Excellent, came late because of labor day but that is unavoidable. Enjoy!

This is the right Roku to buy. You may get a better price on a stick and you could buy the next model down but I think this is the right model for price/features and versatility. I have tried a stick and the connection with this device in exact same location is exponentially better. I also think the omnidirectional remote is worth the extra cost. you can tuck this device behind things and the remote still works.

I chose Roku because we have an account already related to a Roku TV and there was no learning curve. I have used Chromecast and Apple TV through work and I think Roku provides more selections and a smoother experience. I have not compared to FireTV.

If you are buying a Roku streaming device I feel this is the one to buy

The Roku Premiere+ 4K UHD Streaming Media Player is identical to the ROKU Ultra in all respects except for the lack of both the digital audio optical output and USB port included in the ROKU Ultra. Unless you seriously think you will need either of those two options then the ROKU Premiere+ is the way to go. But don’t be confused by the descriptions of the ROKU Premiere+ and the lesser ROKU Premiere. The ROKU Premiere does not support HDR whereas the ROKU Premiere+ does. That plus sign means a lot. The ROKU Premiere+ is probably my tenth or more ROKU player over the years. I was an early adopter way back in the first days of streaming video. At every iteration of streaming video technology there have been player upgrades, but also an increase in complexity of standards and the various moving parts of the whole server to screen system of getting video to the end user. Glitches and problems have been inevitable as each generation of standards and technology has been rolled out by multiple players. Although there have been complaints along the way ROKU has thrived because at the end of the day they keep making great players with a great interface a huge selection of programming and they always get it right, eventually.

My prior ROKU model was the ROKU 4. I was very happy with the ROKU 4. So why did I upgrade, and should you consider upgrading also? The simple answer: HDR. There are some other hardware reasons that are evolutionary. But the real reason is HDR. What, you don’t have HDR and don’t care? You will. It’s always easy to dismiss a new standard as unnecessary and humble brag how you are happy with your current setup and don’t see the point. But, like it or not, the future of TV and video, streaming and disc, is HDR. I won’t go into all the reasons that HDR is important, that’s covered all over the place by people reviewing TV sets.

Let’s just say that HDR is the other half of the 4K revolution and you will not truly enjoy the benefits of 4K until you have a 4K HDR TV with a 10 bit panel and full HDR10 support with HDR sources.

There is at present, in spring 2017, hardly any HDR streaming content available on-line. Amazon, for one, is streaming its own Amazon Originals content in 4K HDR. I am a fan of Amazon’s series BOSCH. My ROKU 4 had partially supported 4K 10 bit monitors but had not fully implemented full HDR10 support. The stream via my ROKU 4 had looked pretty good on my Samsung KS8000 SUHD set. But watching the 4K HDR 60 fps stream of BOSCH via the ROKU Premiere+ was a significant upgrade in tonal quality and surface textures, and thus apparent realism, over the prior 4K UHD non HDR stream that I had with the ROKU 4.

If you are having problems with 4K and HDR picture drop outs or other connection problems when the ROKU Premiere+ is set in “Settings/Display” to enable 4K HDR, and you are absolutely sure of your cables and connections, a VERY IMPORTANT THING to understand is that both the ROKU Ultra and ROKU Premiere+ default to output HDR in 4:2:2 color mode. It may be that some HDR compatible TV sets, expecting HDR10 4:2:0 color space data, may not smoothly handle a 4:2:2 stream, or something about the transition may affect the HDCP handshake or mode. Also, a 4:2:2 stream requires more bandwidth and may place a greater demand on your connection cables. The answer to this is to access a special hidden menu by, on the remote, hitting HOME HOME HOME HOME HOME DOWN LEFT UP UP UP in rapid sequence. This will bring up a “secret” screen that will allow you to switch from 4:2:2 color to 4:2:0 color. This usually solves most compatibility and HDCP problems in HDR mode. You have to have your ROKU display options set to 4K HDR mode for this screen to work.

The main differences in hardware for the ROKU Premiere+ over the ROKU 4 are that it is about 50% smaller, runs much much cooler, it’s barely warm to the touch, and otherwise has almost exactly the same interface. Get all your HDR video ducks in a row because within the year HDR will be much more widely available, HDR sets will be much more the norm rather than a high end choice. I purchased a ROKU Premiere+ certified refurb to save a few bucks. Except for arriving in a brown box instead of a retail box, and having an annoying “B Stock” sticker on the back that was hard to get off, I have no complaints with the refurb unit. I am enthusiastic about the latest generation of ROKU HDR players. RECOMMENDED.
