Rocketbook vs. Elfinbook: I use both and here is my opinion.

Each of these books has their pros and cons. Hopefully I can outline both for you from my perspective so you can see what you prefer.

Paper: Rocketbook uses a paper that feels more plastic and thin. Elfinbook paper feels more substantial and the ink takes to it much faster. Rocketbook uses a square dot grid pattern, while Elfinbook has lines, much like a normal notebook. So when you scan from Rocketbook, it comes across looking like you just wrote on copy paper (no lines) while Elfinbook comes across with lines for more of that notebook look. For my preference, and others that I’ve let test, Elfinbook was the clear winner here.

Size: Somewhat arbitrary as I’m guessing both have different sizes. Rocketbook is more of a personal notebook size…think DayTimer size. Elfinbook was larger and a little less convenient to carry around. The drawback with Rocketbook is the size does prohibit the amount of info you can put on a single page. More pages mean more scanning and organizing. Elfinbook held more notes obviously and it is nicer to have more space for sketches, thoughts etc. I call this one a draw, as it is a personal preference. I personally prefer the smaller size.

Page Turning: Odd category I know, but that is why I included it here as I never thought it was a big deal…until now. Hands down, Rockebook wins here with being able to turn the pages just like a spiral bound notebook. Elfinbook, with its thicker pages required me to open the book and fidget with the pages and spine to complete a page turn…without being concerned of ripping near the spine. Rocketbook you can treat like the old school notebooks: flip pages behind current page and keep going. Elfinbook required a lot of effort for me to even want to try and do that.

App Integration: Rocketbook gives you multiple options to instantly send your notes just by simply making the symbol on the page. You’ve previously told the app where each symbol will send the note. Rocketbook seamlessly reads that and bingo, your document shows up where you told it. Elfinbook is more of a manga process. You have to pick where you want it each time. That becomes a hassle if you use the book for multiple entries (work, personal, diary etc) and have to continually switch where you want it to go. With Rocketbook, I could use 10 pages, each with a different place to go to the cloud just by marking the symbol, take the scan and you are good to go…no delays, no switching after each scan. Rocketbook takes this category.

App: Hands down, Rocketbook’s app is more polished. Elfinbook has a ways to go and could be superior with a few updates. Their OCR is horrible (Rocketbook doesn’t offer that). Elfinbook has a burst type mode and does seem to capture pages faster with its dark border recognition feature. I give this to Rocketbook again, it is just a more polished app.

All in all, I would take elements of each book to create a better one. I continue to use both, but want my Rocketbook to have lines on the paper, and have the thicker paper from Elfinbook.

I’ve had this wipe-clean (and blindingly obviously stated non-microwaveable – see one of the useless reviews elsewhere) Rocketbooks for a month now and it’s fantastic.

I work in healthcare and prefer to handwrite my notes, scan and upload them digitally, then I have to shred the paper.

    Not any more.

I write, scan, and it uploads to my destination. No more paper shredding.

And because it’s not microwaveable (are you picking up a theme here yet?) the ink physically wipes and washes away with no trace so security is good.

The writing experience is great too, even easier then paper as it’s a smooth gliding surface.

Wet and smudged ink? Don’t touch the ink for a few seconds then, it’s hardly rocket(book) science (and I haven’t smudged it once yet and I’m not being especially careful either, but I could imagine lefties having an issue.

You can rub out as you go, although the drying surface leaves an initial residue which doesn’t take the ink quite as well for a few seconds, but it’s fine.

I keep my rocketbook in a cheap but nice padfolio (for those who don’t realise that all spiral bindings can get bashed otherwise – seriously people, what’s wrong with you?) which I picked up from Staples and its like carrying you’re own professional mini-consultancy briefcase when you walk in.

    So yes, I’m loving it.

    Final summary?

It’s not microwaveable! Read the instructions and description! If you want microwaveable, by the microwaveable one!

(Oh, and did I say I love it? )

I purchased this product a year ago and I’ve used it on a regular basis during that year so I believe I am now in a position to post a review.
The pages inside the notebook are a little plastic like but not to an off putting degree. It’s sort of what I expected, a non-porous surface. I like the grid marked on each page which I think is of some assistance when writing or drawing. The grid is visible but not distracting.
The app has improved during my use and is simple to use and does exactly what it should. Pages get uploaded to cloud storage or sent via email, whatever your preferences, without a hitch.
When you have uploaded or finished with a page, it’s a simple job to clean it with a damp cloth. Once it’s dried, a bit of dry tissue can speed up the job if you’re in a hurry, you’re ready to go again.
    All good so far.
    Now the bad news.
During the life of the notebook, a year so far, the covers, in particular the front, have become distorted. They are now far from flat, each has a definite curve. I have tried bending the covers back, I have tried pressing the covers flat with heavy weights for prolonged periods. Nothing seems to work because, sooner rather than later, the covers are curved just as they were before.
It’s a shame because other than that issue I was very happy with the product. In all honesty, I am unable to recommend this notebook because it’s become a pain in the bum.
UPDATE: The seller has contacted me. Apparently there have been a certain number of notebooks from one production run which had issues with the covers curling.
They have promised to provide me with another notepad. That’s certainly increased the customer service kudos. I’ve updated my rating from 1 star to 2 stars. I will update again when and if I receive the new notepad.
UPDATE 2: Well the book didn’t turn up despite the promise. I waited a month.
In a final move towards completion I sent them an email to remind them of their promise. Hey presto, a few days later a new notebook arrives at my office.
So far so good, no unwanted flexing and bending and everything seems to be in order.

    My final verdict.
I am now in a position to recommend the product on the basis that the first book was an isolated manufacturing blip.
As for customer service it seems a bit hot and cold but we got there in the end.

This product amazed me and exceeded my expectations. It works exceptionally and as described. The Rocketbook app is so simple and easy to use. The scanning is perfect, it captures the colors, exposes the page with the right lighting, and crops and adjusts the page properly. Each scan takes less than a second, and you can combine multiple pages into one scan and upload them as one document.
This is brilliant and I am so glad I purchased this product because it is perfect for school. I have seven classes and so I assigned each symbol in the notebook to my respective Google Drive folders. Some people say that the symbols aren’t relatable and its difficult to relate the symbols in the notebook to a class or something. What i did is just assigned my first period class with the first symbol, second period with the second symbol, and so on. The Frixion highlighters and pens erase easily with the included erasers on the pens and effortlessly with a damp microfiber cloth (I provided the link to a very compact microfiber cloth that I use, I’d highly recommend it). Anyways, the product is great, and definitely worth the $35.

Pro tip: use clear tape on the inside cover page where the symbols are. This way if you change a class or something you can just remove the tape, put new tape on and write a new label for the symbol

I recommend several other products to use with this notebook. These are the best deals I could find. I have purchased these and have tried them with the Rocketbook Everlast.
