I originally purchased the Samsung T5 SSD and right when I purchased it, this new SSD was announced to release shortly after announcement. If you play on a console, this is a must! I timed my boot time on Forza Horizon 4 with the built in hard drive in the console and got 3 minutes and 13 seconds abs that was after I refreshed my Xbox cache by holding the power button while the console was on for 8 seconds to hard shut it down. With the Samsung T5 connected and filled to 50% storage, it dropped to exactly 1 minute for the game to load completely! I returned the T5 and tried the T7 out, only to be further impressed. It went down to 53-55 seconds of loading time with the T7 SSD! Even on computing tasks within the game, I noticed tremendous increases in overall speed and performance. I feel like it’s a new faster console with virtually zero lag for any task! Get this, you will thank me. BTW I only filled this SSD with my big heavy games that are a mission to run like Halo MCC, GTA, Forza Horizon 4, and Call of Duty Modern Warfare. The rest of the other games I left on my HDD since they aren’t that hard for the console to load since they aren’t as chunky for the console to render.

Update: Either this SSD has bugs or was received damaged. It has issues loading stuff thoroughly on forza horizon. Cannot effectively play with this issue. It’ll get stuck in loading screens as well as not load maps fully so it’ll show no road or land around you.
Another really annoying thing I noticed was when beginning an online match in ranked team racing, right when you are able to start driving, at like the 5 second mark the entire screen pauses for like 2 seconds so if you are turning during that pause, it is virtually impossible to not crash or fly off the road. This happens in 80%+ races I begin online. Truly thrown off about this issue as I was expecting a beefed up version of the t5 ssd. Will return and stick with the T5 SSD for now until the bugs get worked out. Very dissapointed

I like everything about this product(minus the obnoxious blue light around the finger print reader), its performance is lightning fast, the finger print reader works without a hiccup, its aesthetic is nice, built in encryption. It was initially 5 stars until I noticed my MacBook Pro now gets very very hot doing nothing at all. This isn’t “get hot transferring 500 gigs” or something, this is get very hot just by being plugged in with no activity, or programs open. It’s as simple as unplug the drive, computer cools down, plug drive back in, computer heats up. I tried this on my old MacBook Pro and my 2017 and it does the same on both of them. I was planning on using this as an always connected external drive, but can’t with these thermal issues. I have other external drives that do not cause this issue, so its a curious problem. As of now I don’t think I can keep this product..which is a shame because I like pretty much everything about it.

Edit: Amazon sent me a replacement and I no longer have these thermal issues with my Macs.

After following all steps via the user manual and contacting customer support this SSD won’t recognize that my T7 Touch is connected on either my Mac OS X 10.13 or my Android device. Infuriating.

2020-04-25 TL;DR I’ve returned this drive and got a T5 instead. The T5 works fine.

I really wanted to like this (the 2TB model) but it’s unreliable. I may try it again after Samsung has fixed the bugs, but for now I’ll be returning it soon. I tried Samsung’s support and it routed me down a road to nowhere, so I’m done.

The good: It’s really fast when it works. Things like copying enormous file folders to and from it seem fine.

The unacceptable: Downloading multiple file streams to it from the Internet results in the drive just hanging for seconds at a time. Eventually, it wakes up, but this repeats again and again. I also have the T3 and T5 and they don’t have this problem.

In case anyone at Samsung is listening:
I installed the setup software on a Mac and set a password and 4 fingerprints. I also updated it to the latest firmware. I left the filesystem as it was out of the box (exfat) The machine I actually use it on is a Chromebook, specifically the Google Pixelbook (original, not the Go).

    Update 2020-04-19:
I exchanged it for the same model and the replacement has the same issue. I have to decide now whether I want to keep it in the hopes that Samsung fixes the bug or give up on the T7 and get a T5 instead. Samsung, I’m not your beta tester, but I’ll be happy to submit a detailed report of the problem if you give me an easy way to do that.

    Update 2020-04-23:
It’s worse than I thought. The drive essentially shuts down sporadically even while just playing a video file stored on it. That makes it only good for file backup. I can’t believe this thing made it to market, how did they even test it?

Typical Samsung, drivers won’t install on Big Sur without auxiliary kernel extension (kext) files.
Unsigned packages are not difficult to get notarized by Apple, but Samsung skipped this step hence the ‘big deal’
Samsung T7 SSD drives now are, so much so even Samsung’s own website have a specific article explaining how to ‘disable’ MacOS kernel protections.
    No thanks.
A popular attack vector and the reason Apple now blocks this type of behavior in Big Sur.

One day, lets hope Samsung will be less shady with regard to it’s practices because they make great hardware!

    I was excited….

But when I installed on my mc pro only the storage work fine ..

    Not the finger reader …

It keeps saying plug in ssd hard drive ….
    When it’s all ready connected….
So I called Amazon for help they did and reached out to Samsung seller …
And said it should work on mc pro…
They said return ssd hard drive back and replace for another one….
I did and they replace ..

    Still didn’t work😥

I hope they can up date the software before they lose business….
    Ps.
Fix it Samsung and I will take this review off..

This drive has impressed quite a lot.

    Pros: Very fast
    Fingerprint is convenient
    Comes with high quality cables

Cons: Fingerprint takes a few seconds to read finger, its not like a phone.

Overall very happy with the device. Speed is great, and you don’t unlock the device 100x a day like your phone, so the slower fingerprint reading is not as big of an issue.

this new Samsung ssd touch is great. As soon as you connect the drive to the computer it lets you place your finger on the reader and ride away opens the program and unlocks the drive.

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

I have purchased a T7 which is giving very poor performance compared to the T5. It works like an ordinary hard drive nothing special indeed, which will hardly cost you around $ 70–100. It is slow, speed is only 1 MB/s, not 1050 MB/s as it advertises.

Hier meine:

By all means, this is a great SSD drive. Transfer speed is up to 1,050 MB/s thanks to USB 3.2 Gen.2, but the problem with the finger scanner is that you’ll be limited to using it with your machine only or whichever machine has Samsung’s proprietary software installed. I thought that it would work natively with Mac, but that’s not exactly the case. If you want to use your finger to unlock the drive, you’ll need to install Samsung’s software. This means that if you connect the drive to any other Mac, it won’t work unless it has Samsung’s software installed. The other workaround is for you to password protect the SSD using native encryption on your Mac, but then it renders the finger scanner useless.

The bottom line is that if you’re planning on using the SSD with your computer only, then the finger scanner tech is a neat security feature. If you’re planning on connecting it to multiple Macs, then I suggest you opt for Mac’s native password encryption which works across Macs. Your third option is to leave it as is without any password encryption 🙂
