Our 90 year old house has several doors with knobs that are falling apart, ugly, or no longer latch or lock. Even though our knobs were a little different, had no face plate, I found the door knob mechanism to be a perfect fit. However, the latch portion was not the same size just a heads up.

If you are ordering this, then keep in mind the old addage, “measure twice, cut once”. Measure the size of your old mortise lock before buying. My home is from the 1920’s, with original doors. The inside mechanism of the front door mortise lock is much larger than the newer versions. However, this size works just fine for the other mortise lock doors in my house.

At this point I have bought and installed 5 of these locks. There is SOME variation in the keys, though I cannot say how many. Each package has a little sticker on it saying which key number works with it. The numbers go at least through 12. Only two of my locks came with the same key.

Here are the tools that I needed to replace my antique mortise locks with these ones: 1/4″ mortise chisel, hammer, #2 Philips head screwdriver, and one flathead screwdriver. The reason is that while the lock body fits the old mortise hole, the face plates on this one were all a bit longer than the old one. Also, the holes in the door frame did now line up with this product’s latches, so I had to chip out wood in several places to make this appropriately flush.

The mechanism that controls the latch and mortise had a spring come loose inside after about 6 months of daily use. I was lucky enough that the latch remained in the open position and that the mortise was not locked when it happened. Otherwise I would have been trapped in a room and would have had to break a window to get out.

I opened up the mechanism and fixed it. A spring had popped out of its socked. It is beyond me why there is enough play in the chamber for it to come out like this.

This locked my kids in the bathroom. They did not have access to the key, both keys were outside the bathroom. The locking pawl? Slipped out of place and fell inside the lock so the key was worthless as it was blocked by the pawl. I was able to use a screwdriver to move the back end of it up enough that it opened. When I opened the lock it had just fallen out of place. This lock is dangerous and a safety issue! Just imagine if you were home alone and this happened or if there was an emergency and this happened! I am contacting customer support right now hopefully they pull this product before someone truly gets hurt.

It lasted two months, if that- As others have suggested it looks great installed but breaks and can pose a dangerous situation- The locks lock you into or out of a room because when they latch and break they don’t move when you attempt to turn the knob or use the key- They stay stuck- I had to use scissors to push back the latch to get out of the bathroom last night- Fun stuff ..

Loved this lock set, designed for inside use. Easily installed into a 70 year old door with similar lock set.

These things are pricey for as cheaply made as they are.
Easy enough to install if the latch is facing the same direction as the one you’re replacing.
This assumes you’re replacing the same type of lockset & not a new installation or conversion.
Not terribly hard to reverse the latch unless your cat gets a hold of the spring.
I got everything working except for some reason the key won’t work from outside the room.
Since I don’t use it anyway it’s not a problem for me. But it should work when you pay this much for the thing.
My daughter has the same one on her door, and the knobs kept coming loose until I put loctite on the screws.
The one I replaced on my door may have been the same since it was replaced a few years ago. The screw that held the plate on the side of the housing was still in place. But the plate came off and everything was out of place inside the lock.
We’ll see how long this lasts.
I’m not particularly crazy about these. But it seems like they’re all pretty much the same crap no matter what brand or where you buy them unless you pay a premium.
Only a few months since I installed it and it’s already a problem.
I hate to replace my old solid wood doors because I can’t get decent replacement locks. I’ll probably fill the mortises and re-bore for modern locksets.
    These are actually hot garbage.

I didn’t even know these still existed! It’s nice to be able to replace an old skeleton keyed door handle on my old garage door. Installation was quite simple, the hardest part was removing the old door knob and the screws in it. Once the old one is removed, the new knob fits right in place. It’s action is smooth and my garage door now closes and locks with little effort. It’s a great value over replacing the whole door to fit a newer styled lock. This looks great and performs just as any door knob should.

I got this because I was putting a turn latch on a bathroom door and needed a lock with a key. It installed without too much issue but you have to be careful when tightening the plates because the shape will cause your door wood to scratch or the paint to bubble at the edges.
The deadbolt works on a spring, so make sure you bore out plenty of room for the plunger or else you may find yourself locked in and unable to retract it when you try to use it.
This feels flimsy in comparison to the cast plates and knobs that this is made to imitate, but it looks pretty close. The coating peels off easier than I would like, but when it gets bad it can always be spray painted.

You get what you pay for here. It’s cheap and you can tell. It does work though. The only issue I had with it was that it’s hard to find one of these locks that are going to fit whatever specific size you might be trying to replace, so I had some drilling and chiseling to do to get everything to fit into the door properly. After all was said and done, it works decently enough though.

Only major problem I have, is that the lock here expects the door to be opening toward you, from the outside. My bedroom door opens inward from the outside, so the door can basically be pushed open because of the angled piece of the mechanism isn’t facing the right way. There’s no way I can fix that, this product was not designed to be reversible, so all I would say is, make sure you are getting the proper sided lock before buying one, otherwise you will have to lock your door with a key if you don’t want someone to just push your door open haha.
