I have a variety of cast iron pans, ovens, and grills and use them alot. To get the most out of your grill and to be happy with your purchase you should read the instructions….The factory seasoning gets better with each use. Add extra oil in the beginning. Like all cast iron the grills yours may stick until well seasoned. The factory seasoning is not the end all. Do not use dish soap to clean etc. Like all cast iron this grill gets and stays hot so use mitts or pot holders to handle or just let it cool. I like this little grill for overnight camping trips and cooking for two at home. Lite compared to my other larger grills. The grill certainly should not come with rust but will rust if stored improperly.

I actually like this pan. It heats up quickly. Its size is great for one burner, small apartments etc. But it is big enough to cook more then one thing such as potatoes n bacon at once. I use cast iron often n know how to properly care for it so I haven’t experienced any rusting etc. Its a really good purchase and would make an excellent gift for someone with a small apartment. It does have some weight to it which is to be expected.
Update: it does not lay flatly onto the stove grate. Grease will pool to one side and spill over… I have tried it different times and it keeps doing this. I’m not happy abt this and this is a safety concern for me.

Good quality cast iron and fairly easy to clean. I bought as the measurements just fit my small bbq, but I found that the handles exceeded these measurements and I have to angle the pan to make it fit. For anyone buying, make sure to consider the handles.

This Single-Burner Reversible Grill/Griddle is perfect for a variety of meals and is a breeze to clean. Whether you’re cooking bacon, hamburgers, eggs, pancakes, steak, chicken, or just warming tortillas for tacos, this cast iron grill/griddle is perfect. It also makes a great toasted sandwich. It distributes heat evenly and is the perfect size to feed two or more people, depending on what you’re making.

The fact that it is a single-burner product is something that I find invaluable. It doesn’t take up much space and even looks quaint sitting on my stove in my kitchen when its not in use. My friends love it and I always tell them that for something that can last you forever if you take care of it, this cast iron grill/griddle is priceless.

Although it is heavy, you more than likely won’t need to move it much. I keep mine on my stove top at all times and just warm it up when needed. I rarely have to move it for cleaning, as I can often just wipe it down to remove any remaining food particles. When it does need a deeper clean, warm water does the trick.

The only aspect of this cast iron tool that I have the slightest gripe about is that when cooking food that has juices or grease (i.e. bacon or a steak), there is no easy way to pour them out. This grill/griddle is difficult to move when hot (any time I move mine I have to use two hands to keep it level, which when hot means two oven mits) and when pouring any liquids there is no spout or way for the liquids to be easily removed without it draining out and running down the underside of the grill/griddle. For this reason, I often stick to my Lodge 10.5″ cast iron skillet when cooking bacon. This is strictly because I save bacon grease for cooking with later and the Lodge skillet has a convenient pour spout I can use to pour the bacon grease into a container. If I didn’t use bacon grease later on, I would have no need to switch to the cast iron skillet for bacon. Because this is a particular situation and the grill/griddle is otherwise invaluable, I do not feel the need to dock any stars as part of this review.

The grill/griddle is advertised as coming pre-seasoned and it arrives as such. However, I find that my cast iron products work better and are more non-stick when I add seasoning on top of the factory seasoning. To do this, I do the following steps-

    – Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
    – Wash cast iron product with warm water only.
    – Dry it well with a cloth or paper towels and then place it on stove-top. Turn on the burner and let any remaining moisture evaporate.
    – Rub the entire cast iron product with oil (I use Canola oil and it works very well). This includes the inside, outside, and the handle. Then, wipe off as much residual oil as you can. It may seem that you’re wiping all of the oil off but this is not the case. The cast iron will still season well, however if you leave too much oil on the cast iron it will become sticky and clump during the baking/polymerization process.
    – Place foil on the bottom/bottom rack of your oven (this catches any oil that may drip from your cast iron while it is baking).
    – Place your cast iron product upside down (for this grill/griddle I place the grate side down) and bake for 1 hour at 450 degrees (this amount of time and the high heat allow for the oil to polymerize and become slick, which is what gives the cast iron it’s non-stick property).
    – Remove and let cool.

I do this process 3 to 5 times after receiving a new cast iron product and it always works extremely well. You don’t need to do this entire process often, maybe once or twice every few months after the initial seasoning. Cast iron will continue to collect layers of seasoning as you cook with it, so cook with it often!

Overall, this Lodge Cast Iron Single-Burner Reversible Grill/Griddle is a fantastic purchase and a great tool for your kitchen. If you love cooking with a great product that produces great tasting food, this cast iron product is for you.

I only used this item once to cook chicken. I placed a coat of olive oil due to concerns of the chicken sticking to the grill. The chicken still got stuck to the grill. When trying to clean the grill it was hard to remove. I placed dish soap for some minutes to make it easier. Once, I re-washed it. It seem to have a different appearance. Small rush spots appeared. So, i rewashed because this couldn’t have been right but it got worse. I decided to just return it. The manufacturer just gave me advice him how to properly use and wash. Luckily, amazon is very good at refunds.

This is the email I received

New cast iron that hasn’t had time to develop a well seasoned base can be a bear at first. Because there is only one layer of pre-seasoning on there, issues with sticking can occur. However, you will notice the more you use it, the better it will perform for you.

When cooking, we suggest starting on a low heat to preheat and then gradually work your way up to your desired heat setting. Since cast iron retains heat really well, you really never need to go over a med-high temperature. High temps can cause food to stick as well.

Rust forms when the cookware is exposed to moisture for extended periods of time and is not harmful in any way. To clean the pan after cooking, rinse with warm water, hand-dry, and promptly rub with cooking oil. If it soaks in water or left out to air dry, it will rust. Be sure to store the cookware in a cool, dry place, keeping it away from humidity around a sink or dishwasher.

You can restore your cookware with the steps below:

    1. Scour the surface with hot, soapy water and an SOS or Brillo pad. It is okay to use soap this time because you are preparing to re-season the cookware.
    2. Rinse and hand-dry thoroughly.
    3. Apply a very thin, even coating of vegetable or canola oil to the cookware (inside and out). If you use too much oil, your pan may become sticky.
    4. Place the cookware in the oven upside-down on the top rack.
    5. Place a large baking sheet or aluminum foil on the bottom rack to catch any excess oil that may drip off the cookware.
    6. Bake at 400 F for 1 hour.
    7. Allow to cool and repeat as necessary to achieve the classic black patina.

This griddle works great! We were able to make pancakes on one side, and grill a couple big steaks on the other. Easy to clean. Fits well on the Coleman stove next to a 9” skillet. Will probably be a little snug with anything bigger than that.
