Are you an Apple Homekit user?

Do you have lots of Homekit and non-Homekit compatible smart devices on your network?

Do you derive a perverse pleasure seeing your smart devices available for control before retiring for the evening only to wake up the next morning to observe one-quarter to one-half of them drop inexplicably from the network during your restful slumber?

Do you enjoy receiving texts and/or emails alerting you that your wireless weather station or smart doorbell or garage door opener has lost its connection?

Does a smile blossom on your face when you see your Christmas lights still on while retrieving your morning newspaper because the smart plugs they’re attached to failed to turn off due to dropping from the network during the night?

Do you think repeatedly rebooting your network router on whatever floor of the house it may happen to be located on is a super-duper way to reach your daily exercise goal?

Has your doctor advised you to raise your blood pressure because living on easy street has alarmingly elevated your risk of suffering from syncope?

Well, have I got a wireless system for you! And all for the reasonable price of $400+ dollars excluding tax!

    You’re welcome!

I bought this Arris Surfboard Max Plus mesh system in hopes of taking advantage of the WiFi 6 capabilities and my gigabit fiber connection. The setup was fairly simple, you download an app and it walks you through the process. One thing that did bug me was the fact that there isn’t a way currently to configure the LAN IP to a custom IP of your choosing. Perhaps future firmware updates will change this?

So, the main reason I purchased this router was to use with my new iPhone 11 Pro which has WiFi 6 capabilities. Since I have gigabit fiber, and the Arris Surfboard Max Plus product page claims “true gigabit WiFi” and “400% faster AC WiFi” I assumed I would get close to gigabit WiFi on my iPhone 11 Pro. I get about half of that when connected to the main unit about 5 feet away. However, when connected to the satellite unit, I still get about 500Mbps, which is great, but not gigabit.

I’m still on the search for a WiFi 6 router that will deliver close to gigabit speeds over WiFi 6. It seems as if it is not on the market yet, or the correct firmware hasn’t been released, but the search continues. It would be great if these router companies would stop advertising crazy fast WiFi speeds, when in the real world, you’ll only get a small percentage of what’s advertised at best.

Another note that I feel needs to be added is that the app shows a backhaul connection to the satellite unit at 1.3Gbps, but when hardwired with a laptop to the satellite unit, the Speedtest speeds are about 500Mbps down and about 700Mbps up. Not bad, but why it’s not closer to a gigabit wired is confusing to me? After all is said and done, the coverage is fine and the speeds are about half of a gigabit plan on WiFi using WiFi 6 clients. I docked some stars since it does not deliver what it advertised.

Contrary to other reviews, the Android app works fine in Canada. No iOS app yet but surely not far away. Great product, so far.

    Update 12/3/2019
I have to update my review and change the rating from 5 stars to 1 star. I have had the unit for about 50 days and I’ve had to call their “customer service” now three times. The unit continues to fail and the support was unable after an hour (and moving the satellite unit two times) to get it working. More important, there is no way to get either a replacement or a refund without going through multiple layers (and waiting by the phone on the off chance that they call).

BTW and I don’t know if this is true. The customer service rep advised me that Arris is being purchased by some other company (CommScore?). Again, take this with a grain of salt, but it may be why they are not supporting the products at this time.

    Original review
I needed to purchase a new router and specifically wanted a WiFi 6 mesh router. This SURFboard Max has met and exceeded my expectations.
    Pros:
    – Tri-band router: This set up has a separate band to communicate between the two mesh units & it communicates at GHz speeds.
    – WiFi 6, aka WiFi AX: This future proofs the purchase for a number of years.
    – Mesh: While my home is under 2000 square feet, we had a couple of dead spots. NO Longer
    – App to assist with set up: This is a much better option than logging into the router via your browser

We were up and running in about 25 minutes (mostly because of where I wanted to place the units). And that includes calling tech support to ask some silly questions (like how to dim the light on the unit) and upgrade the firmware.

The only con is that because WiFi 6 is new and there are not a lot of competitors, it’s a little more expensive that I would like.

Bottom line – a great router that will meet my needs for years to come.

App needed to install is not available to Canadian residents. Was excited when reading the positive reviews yet if you sell a product not made for the Canadian market then Amazon.ca should not sell on their website!

I bought these units as a warehouse deals, i guess someone else returned them. My own experience with this Arris product has been great so far ! The setup was really a breeze using the Android app (i live in Canada). Honestly, the setup part with the Android app, has been the easyiest one i have seen (i am an IT professionnal with 20+ years exp. with numerous routers and wifi hardware setups completed from different manuacturers). Arris Devs have done a good job with that software. So the setup was really quick, step by step, about 10 min or so including the reboots, with the routers automatically update themselves with the latest firmware. When the mesh setup is completed, i get an average of 1.7 Gbps for the backhaul communication between the 2 units. My range is greatly upgraded and much better from a wifi router + extender i had before. After a few days up, so far so good ! Works great with a Android app and Microsoft network PC. I will update this post if needed in the coming weeks.
