    Update:

I bought three of these enclosures. One of them has completely died. These enclosures are not reliable.

    Previously:

This review is for the 50422, which I was sent instead of the 50423. (A scan of the manual is in the photo I’ve attached.)

Very odd power management in this unit.

When the unit is disconnected from Windows 7, the ‘power light’ goes off. But the unit is still on!

If the computer is rebooted in this state, the unit will connect itself, and the ‘power light’ comes back on.

So you’ll have to remember to press the power ON/OFF button after disconnecting from Windows, even though the ‘power light’ is already OFF.

If UGREEN had used a toggle switch for power ON/OFF, then this wouldn’t be a problem because the switch would still be in the ON setting, until it is switched to OFF. Or, a second light could have been used as a power indicator.

So, the blue light that comes on is NOT a power indicator. It is a connection indicator.

What a poor design for both the light and the switch.

For those interested, the ugreen.com web site has a download to turn off sleep mode for the 50422/50424. Go to DOWNLOADS/DRIVERS and then to User Manual/Upload.

If the unit still goes into sleep mode, it might be because of a computer setting. If you have Windows 7, click Start (the ‘pizza’) and type in ‘device manager’ (without the quotes). [For Windows 10, just right-click the pizza.] Click on the Device Manager entry to run it, and near the bottom of the pop-up window, expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers section by clicking on the little arrow beside it on the left. Right-click on the first entry that ends with the word ‘Hub’ and then click on Properties. Now click on the Power Management tab. Uncheck the box for ‘Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.’ Then click on OK. Use this procedure to change the setting for each Hub. Or if you just want to change the one that connects the UGREEN unit, you will have to experiment using trial and error. i.e. Change one Hub and see if the UGREEN stays on. If not, change the first Hub setting back, and then try the next Hub setting. When you find the correct Hub, you’ll have to remember to always use the same USB port for the UGREEN unit.

So after reading reviews of people using this for XB1 storage, I decided to give it a go with a spare 1TB HDD I had laying around to expand my XB1 space. Slapped the HD in there, plugged it in to the USB port on the back of the Xbox One S, hit the power button and it immediately recognized it and formatted it to work.

One complication: the sleep mode function of the enclosure will stop the HD from running, and the Xbox does not have the capability to wake the HD up when you try to play a game installed on it. So you have to turn it off, than back on and wait for the XB1 to say the external storage is ready.

It’s not a complete buzzkill, but just a little annoyance. Wish there were a way to disable the sleep mode on the enclosure but otherwise it’s a great, well built enclosure for a good price.

UGREEN makes reliable products and I find myself purchasing more and more of them with each passing year. I bought this unit from Amazon to replace some defective external bays. There is one issue with this unit that I am concerned about. It would seem that even when the unit is switched off there is a power draw through the bridge to the USB port as indicated by the LED on my hub. This is a common issue with many devices of this type requiring an external power supply. For this reason I cannot give UGREEN a full 5 stars for this product. There should be no power running through the bridge at all when the unit is switched off. Other than that it works fine and I hope it will last a few years before I have to replace it.

I bought this HDD enclosure to recover the data from my old defective PC. It fits the Seagate Barracuda 3.5 inch hard drive well and holds the HDD securely in place. The enclosure seems well made and fits together nicely. All the needed cables were included with the enclosure. I was able to connect it to my new PC and the PC recognized the HDD immediately. I was able to recover all of my data from the Seagate HDD. The enclosure is packaged and shipped in a cardboard box. I would buy this enclosure again.

This product is really plug and play with tool-free installation. I have a old 3.5 HDD that I want to plug and get extra storage at home. It was very easy to install, automatically recognized by my computer using the provided USB 3.0 cable. The performance using USB 3.0 is perfect for this kind of hard disk. The major flaw of this unit is the sleeping mode feature. I was thinking to use this extra storage to put some movies and music on it. However, this was not a great idea since this unit can turn off the HDD in the middle of a streaming. Not very convenient and you cannot disable this feature. Then, I use this extra storage as a backup. It would be interesting that you can disable this feature. Overall a good product, just make sure that you don’t want to use this unit as a streaming source and you will be happy! Finally, I’m using it for 1 year and it is still flawlessy working.

First of all this enclosure was very easy to use. I have this configured with a 3TB HDD and its plugged into my wifi router and configured as a NAS. The problem is that the “intelligent” sleep technology turns off the hard drive in the middle of a movie, killing the stream. There is no way to turn off the intelligent sleep, so my opinion is that there is no way to keep this hard drive enclosure in use as a NAS drive due to this.

My advice to the manufacturer: Make the intelligent sleep function a setting that is optional.

I have a newly assembled Gigabyte Z390 AORUS Elite board with all new hardware installer around it , and my PC has been running like a charm .. for mote than 6 months …

Windows 10 sees the USB request ,,, and refuses it 40% of the time !!!
Windows simply turns DOWN the connection request , without any explanations … ????

I have tried to contact the Manufacturer support , but unfortunately there tech support goes threw a customer relation person that tries to interpret your information ,,,
So you never really get a real contact with someone who can help

I’ve been in the computer business for more that 30 years ,
and The reliability of this UNIT is not really there…

Need a unit that will work without any “HASSEL” , with a variety of hard drives you may have on hand ,

I purchased the enclosure for emergency recovery procedures, not for daily use with a back-up drive.
It serves my purposes very well: insertion of the disk into the enclosure only takes seconds, and the disk immediately appears readable on the PC. I had no issues with reading, writing and swapping between several disks.

The HDD does get a little warm with use and some people complained about this, but this is not an issue that is specific to this particular enclosure – any enclosure of similar design will have the same problem.
If you, like me, will be using the enclosure episodically – to recover data from an old computer etc., this is not really a big concern: you can just use the enclosure without the lid.
If you are planning to use it frequently for an external backup drive, another option would be to drill several holes in the plastic case for better air circulation.

I paired this with a WD Blue 4TB 3.5” HDD. Purchased on Friday arrived Monday well packaged with paper work inside instructions and what not. My HDD sits very snugly and securely inside the Enclosure. There are rubber pads on both sides that allow cushion and resistance from moving around. Slid the cover back on and plugged it right up to my Xbox One S.

I’m currently transferring my content from Xbox to HDD everything is going as it should I hear no noise from the HDD inside and after about 30 mins of transferring I feel no heat from the HDD. There is also a blue light and power button on top to let you know when the Enclosure is on and any data activity is being committed.

Will update with any changes I’m satisfied and happy.

I had some problems when I first got the enclosure because it didn’t work with any of my three 1 TB drives (Seagate and Western Digital) and I originally gave it a one star and was planning on sending it back and I contacted the company and complained. However, I later found that the drives had not been inserted properly. I don’t know if the alignment wasn’t right but now it has been working with all the three drives now and I have been transferring data at very high speeds. I deleted the bad review and replaced with this one. When the drive gets hot, I open the easy open cover to vent the heat. Sliding the cover was difficult the first time but now it opens and closes properly. I like the sleep feature that powers down after inactivity and turns on when accessed. I use a full height 3.5 drive but it still rattles a little bit up and down even with the cover closed. This enclosure uses pads to hold in the drive and doesn’t use screws. I will use my shorter height drive on a different enclosure I have that has screw holes at the bottom to hold the drive. Overall, the enclosure is good looking and I like the larger on/off button,
