nothing seems to work on this device not Netflix not prime music not video calls with family outside of house (I have gone in and sent requests for them to be authorized to call but settings pysically will not allow me to turn on ability to call outside of house) which is whole reason her grandmother got her this show. about to return it cause its worst Alexa device I have seen and I have used a lot !

This new Echo Show 5 Kids is exactly the same hardware as the regular Echo Show 5 (2nd Gen, 2021), but with a greenish Chameleon color. This Kids version comes with 1 year of Kids+ subscription, kid-friendly Alexa responses, and parental controls enabled by default. Parents can configure settings, like what authorized contacts are available for video calls, and setting time limits on video watching.

This Show 5 Kids is currently $10 more than the regular Show 5 (2nd Gen, 2021). You get 1 free year of Kids+, so to help you decide if this is worth it for you, here are the current costs of the Kids+ subscription service:

    Single child (1 Kids+ account):
    Prime members – $2.99/month , Non Prime members – $4.99/month
    * (Note, no yearly payment option) *

Family (up to 4 Kids+ accounts):
    Prime members – $6.99/month, Non Prime members – $9.99/month
or 1 year prepaid annually – Prime members – $69, Non Prime members – $99

Remember that you will be billed at the monthly rate once your subscription expires in a year!

In my opinion, this Show 5 Kids version might be especially worthwhile if you are getting it for younger children. In our experience after about age seven or so, our kids weren’t very interested in any of the content in the Kids+ subscription service. The fact that it is only $10 more for this version though, means you might want to get the Show Kids version anyway for older kids, just for the easier and more comprehensive parental controls and cooler color.

The problem with Amazon Kids is, the inability for adults to decide which features their kids can have. I had to just turn off the kids on this to get the features right. He has a music list in Amazon Music, through the Amazon kids function, it wouldn’t play. Oy. There was nothing explicit, and I had personally put that music there, but no, it wouldn’t play. So I finally turned it off just to get him his music list. Hey Amazon, let me know when you get Amazon Kids working where an adult can in fact, parent their kids devices how they want it.

I purchased this for my toddlers room. It was intended mainly to see who’s at our front door, check weather while picking out clothes and story time but 99.9% of the time it plays baby shark on an infinite loop without judgment (his current jam)! I know as he gets older it’ll have more fun features for him to use but right now, BABY SHARK DO DO DO DO DO!

Great little product and easy to use. I like the idea that you can block certain things that you don’t want them to see. I gave it to my daughter for her birthday and she loves it. She plays music and videos on it and there’s just one thing that you have to keep a eye on is homework time, especially during math homework. She was using Alexa to solve her math problems. Other then that it’s a great little device.

I was so excited to see this product I leapt before I looked. It replaces a Echo Dot we configured for our kids, which is a great product that my daughters love. “Alexa, time for bed” is an integral part of our bedtime routine. With this we were looking for greater interactivity as well as well-controlled video communication with family members and friends using “Drop-In.” Had I researched before letting my enthusiasm get the better of me, I would’ve learned that Drop-In is only available to devices within my household. And given that giving them the opportunity to use drop-in without tying up the Echo Show in the kitchen, limiting this feature to only our household Echos makes this product, in many ways, the exact opposite of what I was hoping to get.

I’m not quite sure what Amazon was/is thinking here. It’s easy enough to imagine the risks associated with Drop-In on a device designed for kids, but just as easy to conceive of and design the proper mitigation of those risks. Obviously, each potential contact/device would have to be explicitly approved by the parent (that’s kind of how drop-in works for everyone, anyway). The available hours and maximum duration of calls could be controlled through the Amazon Kids dashboard. I would think Amazon could’ve also enable controls ensure only outbound drop-ins to authorized contacts are possible. And given the maturity of the platform, I wouldn’t have been surprised to find a feature that allows parents to be notified when a drop-in was being initiated from the kids’ Echo Show, maybe even with an option for the parent to listen to and/or view the drop-in themselves.

The fact of the matter is I bought this thinking my kids could drop-in on their grandparents, cousins, best friends, etc., from the comfort and convenience of their own rooms, rather than having to drag chairs around the kitchen to stand up high enough to see our main Echo Show. Unfortunately, Amazon released another quirky, half-baked product that I may or may not keep.

I purchased this for my 8 year old’s school desk now that he’s doing long term distance learning. He doesn’t really use it that often but it allows me to check in on him and utilize the intercoms feature if need be.

It looks cute and the skin/cover is well designed.

We use these “Shows” as drop-in cameras and to control smartphone features around our house so I can’t speak to the other features.

Constantly goes offline. Freezes when using the touchscreen and half the time the touch screen doesn’t work! I expect WAY more from an Amazon product.

    UPDATE:
The Echo is still giving us issues. The camera has never worked, it constantly freezes for 30-60 seconds at a time and the touch screen rarely works. I have multiple Amazon devices in my home and this is the only one that has ever been this terrible. I pre ordered it with high hopes and have been extremely disappointed. It definitely doesn’t seem to be up to Amazon standards.
