I have found it really difficult to find a true two player board game, but this Top Gun board game definitely fits the bill. You can play with four players, or as a team, but I think playing with just two opposing players is, probably, better. The game is quite fast paced and is, basically, two games in one. Firstly, you play a volleyball game which then decides who is to choose whether they attack or defend during the main game. The main game is an aeroplane strategic game – which is excellent – it is strategy, dice and luck. The game says to end when the first player gains 12 tokens but we continued as we were having so much fun with it … we could only get to 18 tokens as cards etc. ran out then. A fantastic game and I recommend.

Bottom line is the game is fun and easy to learn. The volleyball phase is silly fun. Where this game really shines is as an introduction to learning air combat in a board game. Good stepping stone to bigger games, like some of the star wars games, where you would do combat. Game has the feel of an 80s Top Gun movie, with little easter eggs. Game is really two in one with the volleyball and then the air combat. Component quality is pretty good for the pricepoint. We enjoyed the game.

I didn’t buy this from Amazon, but still. It’s a fun game. There is one exception, you must be a Top Gun fan, not a board game fan. The Volleyball is hilariously great. The dogfight or “hop” phase is actually a blast.

The main problem I have with this game is the instructions. They aren’t very clear on some steps and need more detail, I’d say the manual needs to be 2 pages longer to properly explain everything, and it was already a tad long because of all the different parts to the game. Once we played it through once it all became a lot more clear, but we had to make up house rules on the spot for a few different things not covered in the manual. Overall though, I would recommend it for anyone who thinks they might enjoy a Top Gun themed game, or are looking for a game with some unique mechanics (aka the dogfighting).
