This mattress is very hard and I wake up every morning with pain in my lower back and shoulder.
I slept on this for a couple months (but not 100 nights) to give it a good shot, but it’s just not working out.

I contacted Amazon customer service for this who first told me it was outside the return window, and that the 100-day risk free trial is only if the mattress has damages, not for comfort reasons. I’m sorry but what?? That is not what their advertising says, and their product page, order invoice, etc. does not mention this anywhere. “RISK-FREE—Backed by a 10-Year Limited Warranty, the Nod by Tuft & Needle also comes with a risk-free 100-Night Sleep Trial so you can sleep soundly knowing you can actually take the time you need to decide if this mattress is right for you.”

Why have a 100 night free trial if your return window closes well before that?

I fought them on this and they decided to “allow” me to return the item but with a nearly $100 restocking fee. Again – not what risk-free means!

I would very very strongly recommend that you buy a mattress from somewhere else. Unless you’ve slept on this mattress before and are 100% confident it’s going to work for you, DO NOT BUY THIS MATTRESS. It’s just not worth the risk.

My comments will be a little different from what you usually see about beds and mattresses. When shopping the two things I find least helpful are those that have just unpacked the mattress and instantly proclaim it to be the best one ever made, and the other is those that talk about how well it’s made when they’ve only had it for a week. The reality is that how comfortable or not a mattress is to someone else means nothing to me, everyone is shaped differently and has their own idea of what is comfortable. And no one should offer an opinion on how comfortable or durable it is until they have slept on it for at least a few months.

So I’m not going to talk about those things. Almost any reputable mattress company that sells online knows that you can’t try it first so they offer sleep test guarantees. This model offers a 100 day sleep test. That is the only way you will know if it is right for you.

What I can discuss are some of the things that impressed me about this particular product. One is that for its size – mine is an 8 inch thick full size mattress – it arrives easy to handle by one person. Try that with most other full size mattresses. The second is that it expands to full usability much faster than I expected, like an hour. And up there on the list of positives is that there is absolutely no foam odor that for some products can linger for days or even weeks.

Next on the list of things I like is that the foam is unique compared to most. I don’t care for memory foam products because they feel like I am sinking into quicksand and then I am captive in some bottomless pit when I try to turn over. This one compresses nicely to conform from head to toe but knows when to stop so it doesn’t sink too far. And there is no bottoming out – there is no sensation that you have hit a firmer layer deeper down. Even though the mattress is only 8 inches you never feel like you’ve reached bottom. But at the same time, you don’t feel pushback from the foam, or what I would call pressure points. Just an even support from top to bottom. If you do that usual test where you press your open hand into the surface it does not leave an impression but rather pops right back into shape. As I indicated at the beginning, how that feels to me will be completely different from how it feels to you.

The final thing that is immediately noticeable is that I felt like I was sleeping cooler. My old mattress really wasn’t that old and it was a good brand of inner spring with a memory foam layer. I always felt warm, and also like I could feel the layer under the foam. With this one the best way to describe it is after a few minutes I forget that the mattress is even there. That to me is very conducive to a good night’s sleep.

While I can’t think of anything not to like I wouldn’t expect to know that in the first few days anyway. How well it keeps its shape and how durable it is in the long term will be evident after maybe a year or two. But if I discover something new I will certainly report back on it.

It’s admittedly a bit early to review this mattress, having only slept on it for a week now. But I wanted to share my thoughts since I had initially purchased a Modway and returned it to get this mattress.

First, I’ll say this – Amazon tells you to give this up to 72 hours to fill up, so I actually called customer service to ask whether you really needed to wait that long. The answer is no – the mattress can fill out in as little as 2 hours (mine sure did), and even if it doesn’t fill all the way right away, it doesn’t hurt it if you sleep on it. So said the folks at Tuft & Needle.

    Second…

This mattress does not immediately feel like the most comfortable thing in the world. The Modway I’d just returned was a memory foam mattress with a cooling gel pad, and when you got into it, it immediately felt super comfy. I could lay on my side and my back and both ways felt phenomenal. But when my wife slept on it, she sank WAY down. And she’d wake up with terrible back pain.

So when I set up my new Nod mattress…and tested it out…it felt strangely rubbery. It didn’t feel immediately soft OR firm (they say medium, and I suppose that’s pretty much what it is). It also doesn’t let you sink in – at all. With the memory foam mattress (Modway) I barely felt my wife moving on the other side. With this one, I do kind of feel it – but not as much as you would with an innerspring mattress.

Laying on the mattress, again, it doesn’t immediately feel like the most comfortable thing in the world, but both my wife and I have slept incredibly well on it. I wake up feeling refreshed, rested…and no pain for either of us! I sleep on both my back and my sides, in case you’re a side/back sleeper & you’re wondering…

It also sleeps MUCH cooler than both my former innerspring mattress and the Modway, which supposedly has some sort of a cooling gel layer. With both of those, I woke up uncomfortably hot at least once or twice during the night. With this mattress, no such issue. So…older women rejoice! No more crazy night sweats on this thing.

So…that’s pretty much my experience so far.

    Here’s a summary:
    GOOD STUFF:
    1. don’t feel your partner’s movement as much as on an innerspring mattress, but do feel it a bit more than a memory foam mattress.
    2. doesn’t get hot – at all. No night sweats ladies!
    3. wake up feeling refreshed, no aches & pains
    4. can use it pretty much right away, within a couple of hours – no need to wait 72 hours

    NOT SO GOOD STUFF:
    1. doesn’t “feel” immediately comfy, especially if you’re a side sleeper. Not sure how much that matters since my sleep quality has been amazing so far.
    2. you do feel a LITTLE bit of your partner’s movement on the bed…then again, my wife has not had to adjust as much on this mattress, so what little movement you would feel is reduced.

Overall, I highly recommend this mattress so far. I’ll update in a few months if anything changes.
