Runs fast enough to serve as a manual backup drive, and 18TB should be good enough for several years. It is not silent but the fan is reasonably quiet.
I reformatted it for MacOS, by the way. IN GENERAL I’ve noticed that virtually all reviews for external hard drives have a few people complaining of slow R/W, and I think that is because drives are usually delivered in EXFAT format to accommodate both Mac and PC. EXFAT always runs slow in my experience.

The size is compact enough for my desk and it’s an easy plug and play device. The thing I didn’t think about is, it needs electrical power to work. I didn’t pay attention to that and I was thinking it was like my smaller external drive and all I had to do was plug the ubs in. But overall, I’m happy with it.

Just bought it, as it was on sale recently.
So far, it does what it’s supposed to do, and stays pretty quiet. I can hear a slight whoosh once in a while, enough to know it’s there, but the sound isn’t loud or noisy, more like a very quiet, small fan.
Reliability is TBD, that will take 6-12 months.
Hooking it up and installing was a breeze, no issues there.
I just leave it on, it’s also on my desktop all the time, so when I need it, I just transfer files there. So far, it’s only been RAW, TIFF and some JPG files, so lots more room left!

I purchased an identical 8 terabyte Seagate 3 years ago for the purpose of backup and also transporting my Adobe Lightroom Classic Library of images between two computers at different locations. It has been flawless– truly plug and play. I expect the same outstanding performance for my recent purchase when we install it on our Mac.

I had high hopes for this product. An affordable 8 TB HD is a dream. That is, until it fell onto its side one gloomy afternoon. Post the event, the HD is beeping and is making an audible clicking sound… After some research, I found that the needle is most likely stuck somewhere outside of the platter. My computer will no longer read it and therefore, I cannot access my files. I have an appointment set up with a shop that fixes these kinds of issues and hopefully recover the files… We will see. I know there are similar products that are beefier and can handle tip overs etc. but I was shocked at how much damage a simple tip over caused.
Might as well spend the extra $100 for an HD that can take slight* abuse!

It is great to have a large external back-up for my images. The unit is a little noisy at times. It does serve it purpose and that’s what is important.

Significantly speedier than the external drives it replaced even though they were also USB 3.0. A bit on the loud side, you’ll want a little cushioning underneath the drive to minimize noise. Once you do this the noise isn’t bad at all.

So buy a backup like this one, and put your mind at ease.
