I’ve been a loyal subscriber of Outdoors With The Morgans for over 5 years and Mike only recommends tools that he personally uses and loves. When he did a review of the Ecoflow Portable Power Station “River mini”, I knew this unit would come in handy at some point.

Sure enough, about 2 weeks ago, we had a storm system roll through early one morning with very high winds and it knocked down a tree that took out the power lines at 4:15 AM. After getting the LED lanterns out for light, I grabbed the River mini and connected by Internet Modem up to it so we could at least have internet while the power was out. Power was out for about 6 hours and the River mini was going strong.

I will say that it would not power our Keurig coffee maker when the heating element kicked on, it would shut off the River mini. Too much current draw from the heating element I suppose. But for powering up Cell Phones, iPads, Laptops and Modems, it works great!!

Taking advantage of Amazon’s discount was a nice opportunity to supplement our River Pro with an extra battery. It’s perfect for keeping upstairs during blackouts while using the River Pro to manage the refigerator and a few other items downstairs overnight. We plan to use our quiet Honda EU2200i to quickly perfrom daytime recharge of the EcoFlow batteries during extended blackouts which can keep the refrigerator and freezer running without worrying about checking on the gas generator or disturbing the neighbors. Note: this is a basic model with only 3 USB-A ports to connect devices. The USB-C port is sealed and non-functional, and there is no wireless phone charging which I believe both features will appear in an upcoming premium model. After unboxing, I easily connected to our wifi network, completed a firmware check, connected to the EcoFlow app and turned off the X Boost feature, and set the charging capacity to 80% to preserve battery life. Its small size and light weight make it easy to transport around the house, in the car, etc. and we enjoy the versatility of having both the River Pro and Mini.

I have an off-grid property, so I’m very prescious about energy availability. Although we have a gas generator, I like to run it as little as possible. So, I was thrilled to incorporate the River Mini into our setup there. Not only is it a great value for the price, but the extremely precise readouts of charging time and runtime are such a welcome salve for my battery anxiety.

This thing charges FAST…. Way faster than competing battery bricks I’ve tried. And it’s one of the only models out there that can charge AND output power at the same time.

I own quite a few EcoFlow products and other “Solar Generators” and this one goes down as a FAIL and a returned product for me.

The lack of higher and USB A plugs in not desirable at all today and the chipsets for this would fit in this enclosure. So many things today won’t even charge via 1 amp, and I have pocket battery banks with more/better ports than this. Was OK with this when I ordered it as it is documented, but it really is not good.

My main issue with this is an issue with a LOT of the EcoFlow products and it is the noise. There are fans in the device similar to almost all of them in the market, but the frequency and load that the fans turn on is not acceptable. When you are really charging or discharging the device hard, fans are to be expected, but not when the device is idle or being lightly used. Watching a movie and charging your phone at a tiny 10 watts – fan is going to cycle on/off during the movie. Device just sitting there doing nothing – fan still cycles all the time. Plug the bank in and charge it – fan comes on… that is fine, but leave the device plugged in for use as a UPS or standby power/charge- fan cycles on and off all the time. So you can not have this unit in any area where you need it to be quiet, like the room you sleep in or a quit office/living room. Also, be wary using this device outdoors as that fan will suck in dirt when you least expect it because it will turn the fan on when you don’t expect it.

Look for the EcoFLow products that say they have quite charging and avoid the others if noise is any issue to you. The Inverter/Charger circuit they use is great for its quick change rate and high inverter rating, but it must run very hot all the time. I have many other power banks and most DO NOT do this to the extent the EcoFLow products do.
