Being a casual gamer with a DSL connection in today’s world is a real disadvantage. My ping speeds were in the 190s prior to this router. After using the geo filter and anti buffer bloat they dropped into the 20s!!!! Yes, the 20s. Only having 10 MBps, the traffic prioritisation is a must have. I put my PS4 at the top of the list and if somebody decides to fire up youtube while I’m playing its not an issue anymore. This is a game changer. But the real benefit is the DUMA OS. It is perfect for a novice like myself to manage my home network however I want. Kid wont put down the IPad and take out the trash? No problem, one click and that IPad is offline. Want to block sites for certain devices? Done. There are super technical things you can do on this but I’m too scared to mess with those so I don’t. It seems like a lot of money but once you realize the benefits of this you’ll wish you’d have done it sooner.

Unless you really need the geo-filtering or other gaming features, you are much better off buying any other comparable dual band router at half the price. After about a month of having the router, it would randomly decide to reboot at any given time. It doesn’t have to be under any amount of load either, it just does it when it decides to, especially when you are in the middle of a game. It seems to be a somewhat common issue after searching around on the internet, and no real solution has been found besides returning it and trying your luck again. Until they find a solution which hopefully comes as a firmware update, i can not recommend this device especially for the price.

I have owned a lot of routers in my day… however this one really just takes the cake on overpriced – under performing hardware. I can’t even get the WiFi to stay active for more than 4 hours. It drops off at least 6 times a day requiring a full reset. I have tried everything including updating firmware – factory resetting – following the steps of NETGEAR support (Who are less than willing to really assist you) I am stuck with this $300 paper weight now… Hoping I get an email from NETGEAR soon for a replacement or my money back… First and last netgear product I will buy. Switching back to my ASUS router where everything works perfectly. Why did I even upgrade in the first place? Now that’s the real question…

I have a dead zone in my duplex house which my old dlink 605L can only show 1point and cannot have stable connection. Signal strength of this in 2.4 Ghz is penetrating there also which great. I can able to login to office and work without any noticable issue any where from home.
5 Ghz is just passing 1 wall. whereas 2.4 Ghz is passing 2 to 3 walls in between.

Another thing about this router is Duma Os which is awesome if u r monitoring and managing home network frequenty. DHCP settings works as charm as I have some IOT devices where I need static ip address to be assigned.

Overall its good router and value for money if ur house is having lot of dead zone and u r serious about ur home network.

Ignore the other review that says it’s only worth 1*. I replaced a D-Link DIR 825 running DD-WRT because stock firmware is lk;ajesr.

But strictly out of the box, this beast gave my internet it’s full potential. The moment you plug the ethernet to your computer, the OS pops in your browser telling you how to set it up. A child or an elderly person could set this up.

It has some of the easiest VPN setups I’ve seen so far and allows you to use your own VPN or a provider you paid for. You can turn the WPS button via the settings. It has everything you’ve seen except they just have such a nice setup.

After going through the setup, check your buffer bloat via the external site, then tweak that sweet setting everyone buys the router for and check again.

Wifi has excellent range but that’s obvious.

If you’re a gamer with internet speeds that exceeds 50+ mbps and you have some cash to spare and looking for a good router, this could very well exceed your expectations. I can’t speak on behalf of anyone with lower internet speeds but just know that the OS features alone are the reasons to buy the router.

Very good router for Consol gamer or serious gamer because of geo filter feature (DumaOs) where you can block specific regions meaning you won’t get high ping servers.

QoS feature is also very good as you can give priority to Consol/Gaming PC to give it maximum internet connection which will help you reduce lag spikes.

But before you buy I advise you to check this product on other portal or offline retailers. I found this price bit too much in my opinion price should be between 17-18k range. I got this same router for 11900 on other website (I think you guessed it) which is steal considering this product is priced around $300 range on international market. But I only got 2 year warranty where Amazon is giving 3 year but it’s all good.

Also if you can wait than just wait as Netgear launched XR300 with same specifications and features at $200 with some specs like processor, antenna and ethernet ports reduced but I think XR 300 has more than enough as in my opinion XR 500 has some overpowered specs that we don’t need at all. Hope this helps. Happy buying..

This product is a major fail. It requires you to be hands on with the dunasOS while gaming if using the geofilter, or cannot talk to other players or game with friends. It does not Crush lag as advertised. It does not interface smoothly or completely with your modem, even netgear modems- I have a Nighthawk AC1900- to give you a more diverse network or even do it’s job thoroughly. It does not automatically refresh IPs with your modem, so every 2 days it has to be reset manually. Don’t get me started on customer service. I’m returning it ASAP. I expect this review to be deleted. Anyone reading should Google “Netgear XR500 Fail or Problems” and follow the netgear community links to see the issues other people are having. I had to pick a star to submit this review, otherwise it would get none from me.

Don’t expect strong WiFi signals. Router under Rs. 2000 will also give same WiFi range. DumaOS is smooth, device is capable of handling multiple devices simultaneously and every device gets decent WiFi stability. The router does good job in network management for each device. This router purchase should be made on 2 decision.

Is it worth buying only for WiFi? No.

Are you a gamer playing on LAN connection? Yes it’s a recommended buy.

I’m a network engineer and I wanted to replace my enterprise gear at home with something simple to manage, yet powerful. I’m getting old and I’d rather not troubleshoot network problems at home. Not that it happens often, but it’s been a nightmare when the wife calls saying that the Internet isn’t working. Time to downgrade. Enter the Netgear XR500.

The XR500 ticks off the boxes I was looking for:
-It does not need to be rebooted for silly wireless issues. It’s rock-solid stable.
-Never needs a reboot to change a setting.
-The WiFi range goes well into my yard, past my neighbors home and into the street. How?? It blows away a multiple AP setup it replaced.
-My iPhone X is speed testing at 91/5.5 on a 100/5 Internet connection. My computers test at 110+/5.5.
-AirPlay runs flawessly to my Apple TV 4K.
-Initial setup is simple. My dog could have done it.
-VPN is simple to configure and has detailed instructions accompanying the menu options.
-Dynamic DNS is insanely easy to turn on. It even configured an account for me.

While there are very few drawbacks:
-Remote admin can only be secured to one IP or a range. I can’t input a list of IP’s I’d like to have access from.
-There’s no mobile app for DumaOS. The web view works pretty well on mobile though, so I’d say that 75% makes up for it. (UPDATE 10/27/18: The Nigthawk app works great with this router; I highly recommend it.)
-I could not get the Internet to work in “manual setup” mode. The router would proxy any DNS address to itself: 192.168.1.1. There might be a bug that caused the proxy not to turn off, or maybe there’s a setting I simply couldn’t locate. When I used the automatic setup, Internet started working in one click.

Overall I’m very happy with my XR500 and I’m excited to have my home network all under one box again. My “issues” with the router are all “fussy network engineer-problems” that most users would *never ever* encounter. Since my number one concern was stability, I would go as far to say that there is no other home-class router on the market that could satisfy me. I’m a demanding user and the XR500 delivers in spades. In the network world, this thing is the equivalent to an indestructible tank. Congratulations to the Netgear and DumaOS teams who developed this product. You absolutely outdid yourselves.

UPDATE 10/27/18: I’m still absolutely loving this router, and I can’t recommend it enough. I recently updated my XR500 to the latest firmware, and believe it or not, it didn’t require a reboot! This thing NEVER needs to reboot. You may be able to tell that I’m the kind of techie that gets excited about servers with up-times measured in decades. The XR500 definitely gives off that feel! I hadn’t thought about it until today, but we never have network problems at home anymore. Not even one- The last time the Internet stopped working, it was because the power was out during a storm. This device is amazing, and I have ZERO regrets in my purchase decision.
