So you own a chain saw/pole saw and you wonder if after a few years you should have the chain sharpened. DO IT YOURSELF-ITS EASY, buy a 12V dry cell battery and this tool. If you’ve never done this before you can follow the included instructions. Or you could pay someone approximately what you’d pay for this tool and a 12 V battery. Best of all you can sharpen your chain anytime its necessary.

The “shield” that positions the grinder was not in the same plane as the chuck, so moving back and forth as they recommend would grind an elongated hole and wreck the blade. The good news is that I could bend the plate to the correct shape with my fingers. The bad news is that the soft metal will not hold its shape with normal toolbox bumping. There is no provision for setting the depth (rakers), you’ll need a separate tool for that! The manual is specifically wrong in at least two places, including how to set the depth properly with the included wrench (shown on the wrong side of the shield!). Instruction manual is an exercise in multiculturalism, with your preferred language spread over many pages. Worst I’ve seen.
I like the 12V motor for off-grid use, and since the shield just unscrews you can use it as a regular dremel with standard bits, so I’ll probably keep it. Might even sharpen a saw chain with it someday.
PS: My R56 chain wants 4.5mm bits and I wanted diamonds instead of stone, which only widget supply com had.

I gave it a 4/5 because the videos on youtube by oregon are terrible. If you have a bit of know how with sharpening a chain saw this thing will be easy to use.

This is a great chainsaw sharpener. It sharpens my chain quickly with a good edge. Just make sure you use the correct file size for your chain and use it at the correct angle.

Works great, has plenty of power and offers both a cigarette adapter as well as alligator clips to go direct onto your battery terminals (12V). Works great on your ATV or truck when you are out cutting trees. The time it takes to keep the chain sharp more then makes up for itself (and saves your back).

I’m on my second season with this sharpener and it sure saves me a lot of time! Used correctly you’ll be throwing chips inside of 5 minutes. I keep a large vise and 12 volt battery in the back of my truck and I can sharpen my saw quite easily in the field.

I’ve hand filed, bought the gadget with two round files and a flat file, and taken the chain to a professional. This tool is where it’s at. I just popped the hood on my truck, connected to positive and frame as shown in the picture, and I was off. I had a sharp edge in minutes and was back to cutting. This is probably faster than changing the chain and no vice is needed. My only critique is that the cord isn’t as long as I would like. I might get an adapter so I can plug it into my 7 pin trailer plug and work at the tailgate.

I got this to make it easier to stay true to the angle. I will say watch the video on you tube to learn just how easy it is. It also will let you know the correct size for your chain and how to determine correct grind stone size. Only thing I found was that the wrench screw driver end is to fat for the guide screw. I took a file to it and it was perfect. I sharpened my saw blade right away. I went out and used it. It was so sharp just the weight of the chainsaw did the cutting!! Highly recommend!! Also if you purchase i would suggest grabbing some extra grind stones not that you need to but just a good idea. GREAT PRODUCT!!!!

this was far more easier to use than I thought. The video explains all you need to do and I am sorry it took me this long to overcome my fear of sharpening a chainsaw. This makes a world of difference.

I bought this because of the Oregon name, but my thought while using it was that it feels like it won’t hold up well.
That said, it does exactly what it says it will do- it replaces a sharpening file that requires time and effort with a dremel-like tool that saves time and energy. Another reviewer said something about the angle gauge plate not being on the same plane as the bit (it is not), but I don’t feel like it matters. Even with a file mounted in a guide bar, there is a lot of “feel” required to get the angles right, and this feels no different. It’s all in the wrist, as they say.
However, big problem- Amazon will ship the tool with three different bits, but will not ship replacement bits to me in Berkeley, CA. I tried a different vendor on Ebay, and they also said they could not ship to me. I ended up buying from a private party on Ebay, but it’s crazy that you can’t buy replacement bits, depending on your address. I suspect it has to do with CA’s crazy product labeling laws or something. Thanks, California! However, it looks like the EzzDoo bits have the same shank diameter, so that might be a solution. It’s worth pointing out that the Oregon bits are stone, while the EzzDoo bits are diamond coated. Is one better? Who knows.
If this one breaks I’ll try the EzzDoo, but for now it’s a game-changer for sharpening a chainsaw chain.
