Ugh. The old version was great. They made a small change to the new version that makes the game very frustrating and almost guaranteed to go twice or three times as long as it should. There used to be 3 squares that would let you escape the “Endless Loop.” Now there’s one. Round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round you’ll go, until dinner is burnt and the kids want to throw the gameboard. If you can get your hands on the older version do it. But don’t buy the new one. USER TESTING folks.

Three of us played this for the first time today. The other reviewers who lamented about the change with this new version were SO right. Thank goodness for their explanation of how the old board worked. One star deducted for this reason.

When I got to the loop, I luckily landed on exit after only three or four trips around. The other two players went around for what seemed like 100 times, and everyone got really, REALLY antsy. I finally looked up the helpful reviews to figure out how to make the pain go away. Both of the final players finally made it out by swapping the 3 and 5 spaces (mind you, I won long long before this point).

I will use a marker to cross out the poorly placed 3 and 5, and write then in their proper spaces. I am disappointed the game board will not look nice, but ultimately that is not important. My primary goals are for my kids to practice and enjoy math, as well as to bond during family game time.

    Mission achieved!

The new board (the one with the round boulders for spaces, vs. old board with squarish spaces) makes it just about impossible to exit the “endless loop.” They have changed the placement of the “5” and “3” spaces within the loop–previously, landing on one of these spaces would (unless you got a minus 3) guarantee your exit (in addition to landing exactly on the exit space), meaning you have a significant chance of being able to exit the loop on any given turn. Now, however, the “5” and “3” spaces will never land you on the exit–so they are pointless! There’s almost no chance of landing exactly on the exit space on any given turn, which DRASTICALLY lengthens the game. The game has gone from fun to FRUSTRATING. And isn’t the whole point of this to make math fun??

Our “solution” to this so far has been to just ignore the rule of landing exactly on the exit space, treating the exit space as any old space and ignoring the whole loop idea. This makes the game super short, but that’s better for my 4 year old and she still gets addition/subtraction practice without the torture of drawing the game out for hours. I may end up taking a sharpie to the board and changing the placement of the 3 and 5 spaces to where they are SUPPOSED to be, to make it more playable.

If Learning Resources will either correct their game board or send me the older version of the board that actually makes sense, I will update my review with additional stars, as I think it’s a great game otherwise. How did this major flaw make it all the way to production?

Also, I noticed Learning Resources commented on another review recently, stating that the only updates they made to the board were artistic. That is patently false and is the difference between a one and five star game/review for me.

Havnt opened the game so cant review it .. it looks fine and is a gift for grandson tomorrow on his birthday. However it arrived with huge postal label stuck onto the cellophane on front of box… which i cannot remove without leaving half of it .. so disappointing. DO NOT buy this if it is to be given as a gift. So often amazon over package but this is totally the opposite and even more annoying!

Parents wishing to surreptitiously help their children with numbers should go for this. I never stress the education side to her or she will shy away from it – but for those times when (artificially managed) I have a spare 15 mins just before bedtime and I then suggest we have time for this game – it goes down very well and it’s great to see her excited as she does the adding/subtracting. She is 6 and it still is very useful for her – though wish I’d bought it when she was 5.

I’ve heard such great things about this game and I love the idea of the game. BUT they changed the number placement on the board of the new version and it makes the endless loop very very frustrating that we have to change the rules to the game. And now I’m seeing that they have corrected this error and the new boards with the new version the numbers in the endless loop now line up. How do I get a replacement board without the error???? (Also from reading other reviews I notice that other customers have the same complaint about the new version and it’s not just me.)

Bought this for my little four year old as he is currently into doing sums but I think this was a bit advanced for him. The colours and pictures are lovely but I think the rules of the game itself are a bit complicated for a four year old, what with all the jumps and loops etc. The idea is a fantastic concept but I think I may need to keep it for a little later on,

A short but entertaining game to play with children aged about 4 -7. Very quick to learn. Involves practicing addition, subtraction, odd and even numbers. The child has as much chance of winning as the adult which makes it fun.

Great game, my son really enjoys simple maths challenges and this games fulfils that need to make it fun. There is an ‘endless loop’ which he finds hilarious because normally one of us parents gets trapped in it while he wins the game. Cute little moving pieces and good colourful board design. I would look to buy another game from this range.

We bought this game a couple weeks ago for pur 6 year old son. He HATED math! He couldn’t add or subtract whatsoever, even using fingers was a challenge for him. Fast forward 2 weeks… We’ve played this game AT HIS REQUEST (a miracle) about 5-6 times now & he has improved significantly! Tonight he was doing most of the adding and subtracting in his head, no fingers needed! We highly recommend this game!

My soon to be second grader has been practicing addition and subtraction skills with me all summer and I was looking for a fun way to practice because flashcards are boring to her. This game’s maximum addition fact is 6+6, which for my daughter isn’t challenging enough. I went back and forth between getting this and Sums in Space, but I didn’t like the Sums in Space board. So glad I went with this game. I loved the swamp board, creature pieces, and the challenge of the endless loop which you can get stuck in and gives a player who is behind a chance to catch up.

If you want the game to be more challenging, you need to buy a higher number dice. I bought one here on Amazon that is 12 sided, so what we do is use one higher number dice and one of the number dice from this game, so the equations are definitely harder, but not frustrating for her. For example she sometimes gets 12+6 or 12-5. If you want to make it ever harder, you can use two higher number dice for up to 12+12. We aren’t quite there yet, but eventually we will be, so I like that the game can grow with her.

The object of the game is to roll and solve the equations and you move that number of spaces. There are some spaces that say even or odd and you roll the dice and if you get the specified even or odd, you can move that many spaces forward. There are also some spaces with a number on them and if you land on them, you roll the plus/minus dice and move forward or backwards that many spaces. The first one to get to the finish line wins. You can move a lot of spaces at once or just a few depending on the equation you roll, so a lot of times it’s a back and forth game. I highly recommend this game for practicing math facts, but I also recommend getting higher number dice to keep it challenging. Game is great quality and lots of fun!
