Purchased to use for some home theater wiring, thought I’d check against some other 12 and 14 awg wires I had around. Cut off about 1.75″ of each wire and removed copper from insulation. Measured weight of metal from each core using a precision balance:
0.2 g: Pyramid Power 12 awg (this wire)
0.4 g: Monster XP 14 awg purchased around 2000, discontinued in 2018
0.8 g: hardware store 14 gauge purchased in ~2012
1.2 g: Installgear 12 awg purchased here on Amazon (see review)
Checking the official dimensions for stranded copper wire, this wire is about 1/6 the weight per length that 12 awg should be. The Installgear and hardware store wires are close to gauge, and the Monster XP, which is labeled as 14 gauge was later advertised as a 16 gauge, is about half the weight it should be for 14 awg. There is a possibility that the Pyramid wire is aluminum with a copper coating, although looking at the cut strands I can’t tell. Even if this wire is aluminum it is still about half the weight for 12 awg, so it still fails. I did not take a long enough piece off each spool to measure the resistance of the different wires (I didn’t want the hassle). Of the four, the Installgear has the nicest handling and looks good with it’s smoked insulation. The Monster wire is genuinely complicated. It has two outer layers of insulation and a clear plastic core that the copper strands run around. If it were available as 12 gauge I would have bought more.
Given the abysmal quantity of metal actually used in this wire it gets 1 star. Truth in advertising please.

Beware this speaker wire is not 12 gauge, it’s more like 16 gauge. If you want 12 gauge speaker wire do not buy this product. Even the wire spool say’s 12 gauge this product should be removed from Amazon. The proof is in the picture I attached to the review. What a scam BOOOOOOO.

Not 12 gauge, not full copper and not “hi-quality”. See images for comparison between two different spools sold on Amazon. Also, shame on Amazon for selling such a poor product direct from their own store.

I’ve been buying the wrong wire for speakers for over 30 years. I was a novice dj as a teen and now I’m a proud owner of a home cinema. I recently upgraded my AVR (arguably the 1st piece one should buy when preparing for future upgrades to media players & projectors) and have some 6 ohm vintage speakers I wanted to add. Based on the placement, impedance, many videos and forums about the speaker, 12 AWG wire was the answer. As a precaution be aware that when installing in an area with warm lighting, the polarities can be a tad difficult to determine. The sheathing is thick so, PLEASE do yourself and your smile a favor–buy an inexpensive all in one wire stripper & cutter. DO NOT USE YOUR TEETH. I’m not writing from experience. I’m writing from the seat of logic. This is pure copper and true to size. I had my entire theater wired before my wife finished making breakfast.

Be aware of the cheating on gauge size. In addition to many brands I already have, I ordered 6 rolls of 100ft from 3 different brands (Pyramid, InstallerGear, RCA) on Amazon at the same time. For each brand, I ordered 1 roll of 14 gauge and 1 roll of 12 gauge. When received all of them, I was extremely disappointed with 2 rolls of this Pyramid brand. Both 14 & 12 gauge have VERY THIN insulations comparing to all other 5 brands I own. But that’s not the biggest disappointment yet, when I stripped the jackets/insulations off of all 6 rolls, these 2 Pyramid rolls shocked me. The Pyramid 12 gauge (Pyramid RSW12100 12AWG) wire is slightly thinner than the 14 gauge (yes, 14 gauge) of all other 5 brands. The 14 gauge (Pyramid RSW14100 14AWG) wire is also slightly thinner than the 16 gauge of all other 5 brands. I was pissed because I hate to be cheated, and that’s what the Pyramid does in my case. Out of all total 6 brands I now own, the MonsterX and the RCA Digital wires are the ones that have the most thickest insulations and the gauge size can also be trusted. If you just want economy/low pricing, don’t get this brand, go with the InstallerGear instead.

Ordered for a specific purpose and didn’t expect high quality for that type of money. Was definitely disappointed when pulling out about 40 feet of wire, noticed a break in the wire that had been intentionally taped back together. Obviously from the manufacturer. Not cool. Reluctant to continue using. Bought some more wire else where. Don’t waste your money on this product.

Seem small for 14 gauge. It look more like 16 gauge. It do the job, but it is smaller than what I thought to buy.

This wire is NOT 18AWG, and although it looks like copper its conductivity is very low. I measured this wire at 34ohm/kft, whereas 18AWG copper is supposed to be 6.4ohm/kft. This wire is equivalent to about 25AWG. Don’t buy it unless you want a resistor. This will give you large losses connecting to speakers at any distance.

As others have mentioned, this is not even close to the actual gauge listed – I’ve worked with a lot of speaker wire, and this runs more like 22. The plastic insulation is also the most *insanely* ridiculously impossible to strip I’ve ever worked with. Literally lost FEET of cable to failed strips – the crimp pressure applied to cut the sleeve is enough to cut the copper, and the insulation stretches instead of pulling off. Complete garbage.

Junk, cheap, made in china wire. Yes, i did buy this wire 5 years ago, but had it in storage in a dark box in my garage since. Took it out to wire an amp in my truck and found severe oxidation every foot or so was visible through the insulation. Was in a pinch and installed it anyway since i didn’t want to go out to the store and nothing worked. Turns out it was the wire. Tried stripping the insulation at the places where the oxidation occurred and the wire wasn’t even there; just a white dust. Replaced all this crap with new wire and everything worked great. Speaker wire is supposed to last more than 5 years, right?

I’ve had this for some time, it says 18AWG right on it and I never had reason to suspect that wasn’t the case. Recently, I used it for a higher amperage project, and I noticed the voltage drop across the cable was more than 3 times what one would expect from an 18 gauge cable. So I measured the cross section with a micrometer, it came out to 0.75mm, much lower than the > 1mm expected for 18 gauge stranded wire. Just to verify, I unrolled what I had left and measured it at 22 meters, and measured the resistance through the entire length of both strands, 44m total, at 3.0 ohms. To be generous, I rounded up to 50m which works out to 60 ohms per kilometer. This is the expected resistance of 22-23 gauge wire, meaning it contains less than 30% the expected copper of an 18 gauge wire. Selling this wire as 18 gauge wire is outright fraud, and potentially dangerous for anybody using it expecting it to be actual 18 gauge wire. I am VERY unhappy with this purchase, and amazon would do well to cease sales of this product and products from this manufacturer.
Oh, and for those who prefer visuals, I’ve also uploaded a product photo to show a comparison with actual 18 gauge wire.
